>>212197560I wonder why they decided to change that. Episodic shows died. You can't just turn on any old episode and have fun anymore. You need 2 seasons of backstory just to follow along. If you don't catch a show from the beginning you may as well not even bother now.

2. The shift from episodic to serialized was primarily due to the writerโs strikes and the creation of writerโs rooms, where credit for each episode would be round robin rather than the one person doing all the writing on the episode. This was done so shitty writers (read: women) wouldnโt get stuck with credit for the shitty episodes.
>>212197560Dominion war was fantastic. The point is that you can do arcs and episodic at the same time. DS9 has episodes set during the Dominion war that entirely ignore it, only reference it, use it as a primer for something different etc. You can also set up arc elements in a mostly episodic story. But I wouldn't be adverse to completely episodic stories either and no arc at all.

It's really not hard to fix Star Trek.
You created a post-VOY show, you ignore everything that Nu Trek ever did, and you hire legacy Star Trek writers who actually somewhat know what they're doing who are still working actively.
>Ronald D Moore
>Brannon Braga
>Joe Menosky
There are a host of them still around, guys who wrote great episodes.
And then you let them pick young writers that can actually write Star Trek and mentor them in the writer's room, and you create an entire new stock of Star Trek writers.
And obviously, you need a solid legacy Trek EP to keep the show honest and everything on track. I'm not a huge fan of Moore's BSG but he's a good Trek writer and I think he could manage a show decently compared to everyone else who's been doing it in Nu Trek, that's for sure.
If the writing is good, everything else will follow.

(pic related, that little bubble is explored space within the alpha/beta quadrant in Star Trek lol)
The problem with Star Trek (and most scifi) is the writers aren't consistent and don't realize the Galaxy is phenomenally massive. It's like how in TNG, the entire FLEET of the Federation, is smaller than the US Navy.
Based on my calculations, the Federation should have roughly 4.925 billion billion people in Starfleet, (This is based on percentage smaller than modern military percentage of modern countries btw) and if we go by modern navy's, around 1/3rd of these serve aborad star ships. This leaves us with 1.64 billion active starship personal. Average crew compliment of Starships in Federation is around 500 which leaves us with roughly 3 MILLION active ships as part of the Federation.
Yet in TNG, the number is literally double digits (meaning not even 1 ship per core federation world), and in DS9 it's a few thousand.
Again, the 3 million might seem like a huge number, but the Federation has trillions of people across hundreds of worlds spanning around 1500 lightyears.
>>212222183I mean, that's how it worked in The British Empire. Star Trek is basically a naval show, where the ship stops somewhere along their journey and has to solve a problem with the ship at sea, or a problem in whatever colony they stopped at.

Just because you can't deal doesn't make it any less true. That is true on the surface. The fact is, Terran society only became Federation-ready after mass genocidal ethic cleansing from Khan/WW III, followed by Green's Optimal ethnic cleansing, followed by disciplined mentorship from a century of Vulcan first contact. Sure, the bridge of the enterprise and Star Trek Academy are multi-species, but the planets of the Vulcans, Klingons, Andorians, etc, are never less than massively homogenous, and by implication pre-nuTrek spacefaring Earth was too. Federation starships are staffed with multiple species/races for the same reason the UN is: it brings together people from disparate groups. But there's no reason to think the homelands of those groups are multicultural. They're not.
Also the "first interracial kiss" was literally rape in a highly sickening episode in general.
>>212222183Also just to add, we can lower Star Trek's Starfleet's size down to 1354706 ships, based on the average amount of people per population that exists for every single US naval vessel.
This would leave every Federation world with roughly 9000 ships.

>>212229452I want to like the 90s episode but it's too quirky. B-movies, VW vans, pizza and beer, Neelix watching soap operas. The quirk is just off the scales and it's cringeworthy. Also Tom Paris being obsessed with a 50 year period 300 years earlier wouldn't make him cool, the other crew members would definitely treat him like a gigantic nerd for it. It would be like someone who's just irrationally obsessed with the French-Indian Wars.
>>212229613Are you thinking what I'm thinking? The computer age of the late 20th century....IBM discovered a crashed time ship. As a schizo, these episodes just fuck with my brain hardcore. Anyway GOODBYE SEE YOU TOMORROW

>>212230962So he doesn't realize that women like to be objectified, and openly miss it once they hit the wall? He needs to grow up.
>>212231341nta but why would ffmpeg be used here? AI is pretty good at translation already so I could easily see Apple or something in the future implementing auto translation features in their airpods or something. Maybe ffmpeg would be used in the background but I feel like they would just use some other form of in-house tech since it really wouldn't need to care about file formats if it's just parsing and listening to the microphone.
>>212231371Call AI what you want but it's fairly competent at translation.
>>212231122So generally from.the 90s to the first Obama term it was frowned upon to be racist or sexist. Not that it didnt exist, but it was generally frowned upon. Around the time of Obama and occupy culture shifted from class based grievances to sex/race based grievance culture. So the affluent kids in the media could pretend to be victims, the rich could deflect to racial issues and we elected a souless billionaire to fix the issues of billionaires, followed by another sellout democrat followed by the retarded billionaire again. And the whole time we've been bitching about the justified shootings of people like Jacob Blake and Michael brown, instead of demanding wage increases and organizing labor. It's much easier for affluent kids to bitch about race and gender than ever admit they are actually the privileged. We have two parties that deflect to either "whitey is keeping us down" or "it's all the browns that I hired for my resort that are keeping us down". Not that I don't think illegal immigration is a problem, but I also know the party with a mandate to clean it up is also the party that has been importing the people to suppress wages and both parties opened the economy to the rest of the world to outsource labor to. And now we've got retards telling us to pick a side full of race grifters.
I just finished the VOY equinox episodes, it was cool, I liked it.

There's no way a Starfleet captain commits genocide to power his ship, just so he can get like 100 people home instead of settling on an M class.

>>212232644Enterprise can stay
I find the number one problem of nutrek is that old Trek had a unique way of depicting how humans interact with each other 300-400 years in the future. Some viewers call it "robotic" and "autistic" but they're missing the point. In nuTrek, they're just like modern day people. They talk like us, they use our slang. It takes you out of it and it's not consistent with the older shows.
>>212232644Enterprise is Good
>>212232786in old trek people interacted with each other in good faith, earnestness and compassion. that's why it seems so stupid to modern audiences
>>212198217How about accepting that if you donโt conform to the hivemind/federation that youโll be expelled from the council?
>>212232786also the spaceships look less cozy. This chrome sterile 'heckin' Star Trek movie' look. It's not cozy at all.
I haven't watched SNW , but from what I've seen. The ship does not look cozy whatsoever. Looks like a Star Trek 2010s movie.
super serious non cozyh control computer . Star Trek into Darkness. Buy one soda get another big gulp free. Watch movie with your hispanic cousins. Michael Bay.
>>212232879they use the same aesthetic in the Picard show too. This is supposed to still be set within 20 years of the TNG era.
>>212232928I miss my hispanic cousins. I wasn't trying to say they were a bad part of that experience. They were the good part.
its so funny it had to be intentional when in Amok Time Kirk's leaving Spock's quarters after their very heartfelt conversation and when the door opens you still see the fucking soup on the wall that just totally breaks the tension.

>>212233175"Neo Constitution class" as a designation is so fucking STUPID I swear to GOD
By that logic, most every class of the one saucer, two nacelles variety can be called Constitution class.

>>212233273B-b-but VEO 3 is just a glorified Indian computer graphics studio!
>>212233273Sure thing, Sanjeet.
>>212231341My point was that ffmpeg can do that now, and AI can adapt to future codecs, so the idea of a universal audio/video translator is not far fetched.
>>212232838>in old trek people interacted with each other in good faith, earnestness and compassion. That's what people call autistic nowadays. Funny how everyone who has a hobby and is competent is called autistic.
>>212233257 furthermore
>>212233175>why did their main viewscreen on the bridge double as an airlock?Because nutrek does not have genuine autistic nerds designing the starships and explaining how they work in a believable way. They don't have Andrew Probert or Rick Sternbach.

>>212233324>ffmpegWhy do you keep bringing up ffmpeg? Universal translators would very likely use cameras and passive audio listening to translate in real time by parsing it all to the AI model. ffmpeg might be used but it's the least important part of the chain. Something AR related like the vision pro or some AR glasses is the most likely scenario for universal translation. On the computer we can already translate nearly on the fly.
>>212194851 (OP)We don't, it was perfect and nutrek isn't required
>>212233504>Why do you keep bringing up ffmpeg?NTA but presumably it's a good example of using a Fourier transform to normalize a signal, which would be a critical part of a real-time translation service.
I never realized until this time, this is gowron, guess once you really look at the eyes you can see it

>>212233536god thats ugly, everything about it the design the animation literally everything is disgusting
>>212232192Yeah Kira in mid 20th century evening wear was always a treat. Only reason to want any remastered DS9 is better resolution of those scenes.
>>212233639I doubt newhart could do the eyes
>>212233363Almost all of the starship designs post-2009 are so fucking UGLY too it genuinely infuriates me. Everything is all jagged lines, bulbous nacelles that ruin the flow, or in the case of Discovery, a flying pizza cutter with chopsticks. 20-30 years ago these designs would have been rejected. In fact, in the case of the Crossfield class, it WAS based on a Ralph McQuarrie concept that was REJECTED because the producers thought it was UGLY.
>>212233619>>212233644looks functional to me, which is what you get from a workhorse/support utility ship

I never understood people posting the Defiant in their "favourite ship" threads, it's quite unattractive.
AFTER watching DS9 I found an appreciation for it but compared to 90% of everything else it's not very aesthetically pleasing.
The bridge is nice I guess.
>>212234016Yeah I never liked the defiant class as a ship, but I like the defiant class in the show because it was a well written show so though I didn't like the design I still like the ship. Just like the STD ship is garish, but I'd be forgiving it if I liked the show.
>intrepid classI liked it, but I also like to do things the janeway
>>212234078You're wrong. Galaxy and Sovereign classes convey power and speed. Even the Odyssey class they ripped off from STO was okay. This so called Neo Constitution is a kitbash. It's blocky and lacks and style or grace.
>>212234133I simply cannot be wrong about an aesthetic opinion.
>>212234092>>212234115the defiant works as advertised its moves like it looks like it should the design conveys speed maneuverability while being hard hitting, the nacelles are almost bigger then the ship, its a fighter pure and simple

>>212234408This is applying your preconceived notions of what design is the rotten apple and which is the pristine apple. It's a bad argument because it has no basis in reality and you're just projecting your opinion on which apple is which design. Just really bad logic here. One ship is an apple and the other ship is an orange. I like both.

>They're both cars, though!
>>212234525It might make you go blind too
