Dude, you gotta keep going until at LEAST the third season. Season four has a bit of a dip in quality but then season five comes back with an absolute VENGEANCE and every episode is an absolute classic.

Mike was there from the very beginning; he was The Cart Boy and he was the boom mic operator that got shot at the end of the first black and white film.
The problem with the character isn't the overexposure; its the the dramatic change and shift from a quieter, more contemplative oddball guy that lived in the park inside of a shed and took care of all the cats to a the raspier voiced obnoxious cartoon he became later on. One of the first appearances of Bubbles has him quoting Plato and explaining 'The Noble Lie' to Julian and how it can be applied to Ricky and Lucy's chaotic relationship. I don't think there's a scene in the remainder of the series that displays that sort of character depth ever again. He was a soft-spoken guy in the park with a bit of an edge to him, but that was it.
After Clattenburg left, Mike took on more control of the writing of the series, which is where you get the more crass humour revolving around saying variations of words with "cocks" and "dicks" and how Bubbles is always right and the smart one. That's where I feel the downturn and the souring on the character comes from.

Not him but literally one of the first scenes in S01E01 is Ricky fighting a 12 year old and yelling "GIMME YOUR SMOKES, GORDON"
Also pretty sure there's a scene where Ricky's passed out drunk and a couple kids steal his wallet and smokes
Don't think it every shows a kid with a dart in his mouth though

No, they didn't. It was always an implied joke of underage smoking that never ever once got shown on screen. It was a running gag, but it never did you once ever see an underage child with a lit cigarette.
But what do I know...back in my day, a tranny leaking fluid was a car issue.

Lahey is the only character whose flanderization kind of works from S1 to the Shitflix ones, since he goes deeper and deeper into the liquor and just turns into a lunatic. It makes sense since he embraces both alcohol and being a homo.

For the rest of them it's a pretty big downgrade.
