Soviet sci-fi has a certain charm to it, but it's a shame that they are all so low budget because it's clear they all had a lot creative ideas that they couldn't really film at the time.

True.
I find that in Konstantin Lopushansky's stuff. If only he had a bigger budget.

Lol, thank goodness I'm not alone then. I always felt the ending was a bit underwhelming. That might be the whole point, with all the silence of God stuff, but I don't know.

Dude living in a post apocalyptic world going to visit a place where the last remnant of the old world is stored. I mostly just remember the torches everywhere and the weird industrial cult area. It's been awhile since I watched it, but I always thought the director would do more and add a bunch of crazy shit if he had the ability.

Eastern europe had a few kino machines.
Zulawski:
Diabel (1972)
Possession (1981)
On the Silver Globe (1988) - this one is half of the film though, most of it was destroyed by the polish authorities at the time

Wojciech Has (this is the one who did op's rec):
The Saragossa Manuscript
Memoirs of a Sinner (this might be incomprehensible if you have not read the book, I'm not sure, but it's kino regardless)
>The Tribulations of Balthazar Kobera

I'd also recommend Birds, Orphans, and Fools.

The Feasts of Belshazzar, or a Night with Stalin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZf2qBZNUAY

The story is so fucking good. You dont even need to understand.
You can skip the 19 minute - to 1:15:00
This is just Gerogian music perfomring at Stalins headquarters in Abkhazia. Its not a movie about Stalin, but about someone who had an interaction with him in his youth pre revolution, and then realizing that the one who he saw commit a crime became Stalin.

Potop (the deluge) is some prime kino, too.
I think it's the only movie longer than three hours that I have been able to watch in one sitting (it's almost six hours of pure kino), and not only that, I actually felt engaged for the entire time.

Literally everyone calls Poland that. Only Poles call themselves Central Europeans. And that's because they don't want to be associated with Russians.
