It's one of the few episodes where he's portrayed as an actual military commander dealing with all that entails. It's a realistic portrayal of the detachment that is necessary to send people off to die to achieve some strategic objective that you hope serves the greater good.
The woman that died was an officer in Starfleet. Not just some random enlisted personnel, but an officer. Not only that but she knew the risk more than other ensigns because of what had happened to her at the academy.

Obviously in real life, aerodynamics and size does not matter in space, but in Star Trek, it does. Artistic license helps convey a sense of scale to the audience. Large capital ships and Borg cubes move slowly while engaged in battle. Small ships, fighters, and shuttles move quickly. The point of this argument was that in the modern Treks, they've forgotten this, so every starship, no matter how big or how small, can whizz around at breakneck speeds.

It's not as fast as a galaxy class ship. It is not as fast as a borg ship. A bigger ship with a bigger arsenal is going to move slower than a smaller ship with forward facing cannons. The reason capital ships move slower is because their battle profile is to be tanks unleashing armaments where smaller ships are mean to weave in and out of the battle and distract larger capital ships. No one said anything about warp speeds. Obviously the Borg cube is the fastest while at warp without even opening a transwarp corridor. We're talking about their maneuverability while in battle. In Trek, the humor should come from the characters and the situations, but never the world.
