I honestly think the rape was Phillips' idea and Phoenix, in his anorexia-induced psychosis, accepted to do it and only realized what a horrifically idiotic decision that was only after finally eating something and getting his sanity back.

The movie being a musical is so fucking bening in comparison to the rape that it's ridiculous you're putting it in the same sentence. If the movie was an actual musical (which it wasn't, it was a legal torture porn drama with some dream sequences with singing) then it would've been a worthwhile movie.
