You marathoned it years after it came out. Of course it's not gonna be that good. It was like LOST or Game of Thrones in that its appeal was based in mass popularity across most demographics when it aired. Everyone followed and talked about it online and IRL, which made watching it more fun.
This is impossible to recreate in 2025. Demographics are isolated in bubbles of content that panders to them. Even when huge hit shows come out and episodes are released weekly, they are not watched at the same time and people avoid discussion to avoid spoilers. Added to which, a large percent of the male population is completely checked out of all "trending" media so they don't give a fuck. Personally, I only watch things years after they come out now because it's likely garbage anyway.
tl;dr you had to be there

Uh, I actually watched it long after the fad was over.
It was heavily flawed by several moments, but it was a masterpiece. (it's insanely hard to find works/masterpiece with very limited flaws)

I only like this series more as it ages. It is a remarkably unpreachy piece of media considering when it was made.

I know Vince eventually got all butthurt about people not understanding that Walt is...le bad, but if you actually go and rewatch it all you can see that browbeating Walt is literally never the point of the series. The fact that he becomes a monster is always played in a more tragic than condemnatory way and even to the very end its made in a way that has you rooting for Walt just to see where he ends up. You might root for Jesse or Hank too but you still want to see what shenanigans Walt is going to try to get out each new scenario. You still empathize with him.

It is just a kino story about a smart prideful guy flaming out filled with lots of good characters, funny dialogue, engaging plot points, and decent cinematography and music. And the atmosphere is very comfy, especially early on.

I agree, this was a huge merit of the show. But in S5 they ruined it. They had scenes where Walt was a cartoon villain, complete with villainous quips and evil music. It really detracts from the rest of the scenes where Walt is more genuinely depicted. Probably the worst thing about S5 but the list is long.

I agree there are some goofy lines and sequences but Walt is never totally dehumanized nor made into an antagonist. He is still very human in Ozymandias, and when he begs for Hanks life.

And then in the very end we are unambiguously rooting for him when he takes on the nazi gang and Lydia and saves Jesse. Even when he says "I did it for me, I was good at it" to Skylar she doesn't condemn him or anything, she seems to almost gets it despite it destroying all their lives. He's still depicted as a sort of antihero and sympathetic character.

I really only noticed when I rewatched it recently because the discourse has become so heavily focused on Walt being evil that I forgot how the show really felt. Its only in the first half of S5 that Walt is genuinely cartoonishly evil and this is just him fully giving in to his ego and malice. He resurfaces as a more complex human after that

The hate and calling it garbage is unfair to Breaking Bad, its good but its not the best thing ever made. Its a tier or two below Sopranos.

You made up a whole bunch of bullshit. Nobody gave it a shit about Breaking Bad until Season 5B started which was in 2013. Most people MARATHONED the show on Netflix because of shitty reddit memes.

Paying Badger and Skinny Pete to threaten Elliot and Gretchen was pretty stupid
Blowing up Tuco's office and getting away with it was pretty stupid no matter how ballsy it was
Lashing out because you feel personally threatened by Gus' autism was stupid
You'd expect an intelligent, evidently well-read man like Walter to have more intrigue to his character, but the whole series consists of him behaving like a hormonal teenager. At least Sopranos went through the effort of showing you that Tony can't just lay low and collect his envelopes every month. Walt would've probably sued Gray Matter after he left if this occurred IRL and come away with a settlement but of course he can't do that in the show because that would ruin the contrived plot.
