It's not about seeing it, Brad would have most likely seen Morgan take something out and lay it on the ground. The finger thing might be a plausible cover up but it's all dependent on Spacey staying silent or buying into Freeman's gaslighting. He was able to trick them this far into the investigation, it's fair to say that he'd be motivated enough to goad Brad into finding the head.
