Goldblum should have died halfway through. He doesn't play a major part in the 2nd half, and there was no great shock at the death of the blood sucking lawyer, who might as well been wearing a red shirt on the Enterprise from the start. Newman's death was ok but also predictable. Sam Jackson was fine, I guess, but a bit of a waste of talent considering how Tarantino used him like 6 months later. Only the Rhodesian guy's death could be considered kino or even close to it.
There was no tension in scenes involving the kids because you knew the kids weren't going to get eaten. It could have been saved by having Sam Neill die, perhaps saving the kids, thus completing his arc from anti-natal to being a father figure, but they kept him alive for sequels, in which he appears in like one and a bit.
I won't go full contrarian; it's not a bad movie. But it's not perfect
