Carl Theodor Dryer Edition
>Question of the Day"Through style one infuses a film with a soul, and that is what makes it art," wrote the Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer. How do you define "soulful" filmmaking? Is there even such a thing?

>Kosinski isn’t exactly a montage master. F1’s racing scenes don’t match Walter Hill’s The Driver, Sam Peckinpah’s Convoy, or Michael Bay’s astonishing 6 Underground and Ambulance — the best of all automotive cinematic sensations. Kosinski’s hackwork typifies the unexceptional spectacle of Millennial movies (so recently endured with Cruise’s Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning), where the effort to overwhelm uses technology to merely over-market what is essentially unoriginal content. (Think of Brad Pitt retooling his inside-baseball movie Moneyball, that pseudo-intellectual waste of his charisma.) For race-car film buffs, F1 is no more exciting than Grand Prix, The French Connection, The Road Warrior, Rush, the first Fast and Furious movie, or the underrated The Seven-Ups. Even Jared Hess’s fantasy speed-romps in A Minecraft Movie were more delightful.
>>212269570The best racing movie is Michael Mann's film Ferrari starring Sarah Gadon

>90% of...You guys really don't understand what the word ALL means huh.
I asked chatgp and even that only came up with two films:
Here are strictly exterior-only films—no interior scenes whatsoever:
Films with only outdoor settings
1. Gerry (2002, dir. Gus Van Sant)
Two friends wander an endless desert; the screenplay contains zero indoor locations—every moment is set in open air.
2. The Bear (1988, dir. Jean‑Jacques Annaud)
A wilderness epic entirely from a bear’s perspective. No humans ever appear inside buildings—just forests, rivers, and camera-eye nature.

I avoided watching Wes Anderson movies because they seemed like twee, facile garbage for people who don't really care about cinema, yet want some "aesthetic" stills to post on their social media.
But Charlotte is in his new movie so I suppose I'll finally have to watch one of his films.
Watched Melancholia last night and I feel like it was Lars prostituting himself out for western acclaim and academy awards. Definitely the most disappointing film of his that I have seen thus far. I ordered the director's cut blu ray of Nymphomaniac because if I'm going to watch it I may as watch all 5 hours.
>>212313547Yep, just a skim through the revolution and what was there before, in high school history class.
>>212313573I disagree, Melancholia is another depressive masterpiece from the FUCK himself.
>>212313573>twee, facile garbage for people who don't really care about cinemaA better review of his ouevre without watching it than the critics who did. Two big thumbs up.
>>212313573>>212313837His early flicks were good.

Is American Dad! /film/-approved?
Fantasia Film Festival seems kind of kick ass, assembling a letterboxd list of the lineup (already did one in 2024) and not only there's a shit ton of showings overall it's all interesting, it's supposed to be a genre film festival but it really isn't as much horror slop as it's basically everything that might fall under the vulgar auterism lense as well as really a lot of just experimental dramas. The animation section is also quite interesting, and they have a lot of cool retrospectives often of giga obscure stuff. It's none of the generic pretentiousness of the typical film festival yet also not at all numbskull stupidity, there is a genuine deep investment in the art of cinema from programmers showcased.

>>212313277>>212313466The funny thing about this is that, due to McCarthyism, a lot of america's experts on china were sacked. When you consider that in combination with the cultural revolution, it shows how much the US was in the dark regarding china for a long time. Extrapolate as you like.
I've realised why Ozu bothers me
It's because he's a classic paternalistic conservative par excellence and I'm a anarchic communist with fascist and theocratic leanings

I've realised why Sono bothers me
