It's really odd, I feel like Season 2 was paving the way for some really good payoffs, with Gi-Hun slowly losing his faith in humanity, as seen by him sacrificing players in the nighttime riots in order to take the guards by surprise and Frontman ending his little experiment after seeing him fall down to that level.
Instead it was a jumbled mess
And a big lack of Frontman in Season 3, when he was the BEST part of Season 2, was also a big fucking missed opportunity

yeah i just finished s3. I really felt like S2 was an ok build up, and it wasn't as great as the first, lack of novelty made it not as good. But there was something to work with there.

Instead, they basically kill all the characters people cared about the most early on in S3. And they don't really die in ways that feel that important or dignified. In fact, a lot of it just didn't make sense. The mother killing her son was extremely out of character, yes, she was trying to defend that girl, but if she feels so bad about it to the point where she kills herself immediately after, why does she do it? Seemed really illogical, I get they were trying to show that the women had a bond, through motherhood, but she kills her own son?

The rest of the story felt really poorly planned out, didn't really make sense, and the ending was really unsatisfying.

'I'm not gonna let my son kill the mother of a newborn baby' is a thought that might have crossed her mind, in the way of a parent preventing their child from making a bad mistake. Both in the sense of care and protection for the mother and child and not wanting to make the newborn baby an orphan, but also in the way that she didn't want her son to have the blood of an innocent that innocent on his hands. Taking the life of a random person is one thing but killing a mother to a newborn baby and orphaning the baby in the process is on a different level. She couldn't physically stop him with with just her strength, so it was an extreme measure taken out of desperation and panic after she unsuccessfully offered her own self to him so he could score the kill. Also a very extreme and selfless act.

The way I also interpreted it is that she didn't stab him with the intention to kill, it was just the only way she could come up with in that moment to get him to stop. A decision made in the heat of the moment, and it obviously fucked her up, and understandably so. The bond between parent and child is one of the purest in the way that the parent can sacrifice their own self for their child without thinking twice (which she did on more than one occasion), so to do the opposite and take your own child's life has got to cause a major breakdown in any sane parent.

It's one of those moral dilemmas where between 2 choices faced by a person, no matter what they choose, they'll be left with a heavily guilty conscience because both choices carry that level of weight for that individual. In my personal opinion, at least in it's respective season if not the entire show, it's probably the one event with the most depth and gravity considering all the various emotions, circumstances and morals at play.

I think it's less the fact that we got more young characters joining in, since S1 already had some, rather it's how a lot of them are barely contextualized in how they joined the games and many of them looked like they were just picked fresh off the streets. S1 made a clear point that they only recruited players that hit rock bottom in life where no one in society would miss them if they got killed randomly (making it easier to hide the games from authorities). Most notably, the North Korean chick Sae-byeok had the angle of needing to grow up early and take care of her brother because she lost her parents early, again keeping in theme with the chosen players being no-life adults. While we're given the reason that a lot of them got scammed by MG Coin, they're barely given any character, so consciously bringing in younger players felt like it barely added much to the story besides the spectacle of seeing zoomers acting more retarded than the adults.

Two changes I’d have made to fix the ending.
1) When detective Hwong got the panicked call advising that Captain Pal was on of the pink guys, he should’ve listened and warned the special forces guys so that they’d all survive.

2) they need either a couple scenes or an extra episodes dedicated to the special forces guys infiltrating the island and apprehending the VIPs or at least putting a stop to be explosive countdown so that they’d have proof and the games would become revealed to the world. During the raid the brothers should have had a confrontation. It’s fine if the frontman gets away, just exchange some words. Give us some closure.

That’s it. The series should’ve ended there. Even then if they really wanted to they could still included the revelation that other games are going on internationally. It’s not like they were exposed.

I insult people because they criticise writing with strong conviction without really taking the time to reflect on the writing, and it frustrates me because this opinion can spread to others. Like when you say something like ‘the old lady killed her son and then killed herself and they both came out of no where’, I can tell you either weren’t paying attention to the show, or were quick to judge the writing without taking the time to think about it, because the show very clearly hinted that both these actions were very in character.
