Supernatural is one of the greatest TV shows ever made, if you are just watching the first 5 seasons. I hugely miss monster-of-the-week 20+ episode TV shows.

There's plenty of good stuff after S5, but it's not worth watching unless you really like the show. It's more-so fan fiction kind of story telling. In my head it just ends at tne end of 5. I wouldn't have minded the end of the darkness arc as well as a true ending. I don't even mind the ideas behind the actual ending we got, it was just poorly executed.

Pretty much, you end at S5 and you don't have the cliff-hanger of Sam being alive and it's a perfect extremely bitter-sweet ending. The brother who was all about hunting and didn't even consider having a family ends up being the survivor who starts a family. The brother who wanted nothing to do with hunting and wanted to just live a normal family life ends up choosing to sacrifice himself as he came to learn the importance of what they were doing. The whole scene of Lucifer Sam beating the ever living fuck out of Dean while he just takes it and tells Sam it's okay is the only time the show ever made me tear up a bit. Which is saying something because I actually like the show a lot.

It was kino of the highest order because you could feel the genuine brotherhood between them up until that point. Makes it hit super hard because the relationship dynamic is extremely believable. Dean is essentially living his final moments as he is getting beat to death by Lucifer and his final act is to comfort his little brother in the face of death and the apocalypse. Which makes it hugely believable that it was enough to help Sam break through and take control, because that shit is emotionally powerful as shit. I honestly think it's why the show went for as long as it did (outside of the fujo audience keeping it alive). As fucking retarded as the story got you always felt genuine brotherhood between Sam and Dean in a way that isn't common in TV and film.

Basically Dean was supposed to be the perfect vessel and his half-brother was just a substitute that wasn't as good but still serviceable, and so they settled on him because it was better than nothing since Dean wasn't going to do it.
