When Movies Felt Like Once-in-a-Lifetime Events
Why don’t they make event films that truly feel like the event of a lifetime—films that are great and epic? We had The Lord of the Rings—why don’t they make more movies that epic? Is it really that hard? Are there any upcoming movies that might feel like that?

It used to be that when you went to the theater, you’d experience something huge. Even the marketing felt massive. There were tie-ins everywhere—comics, video games, toys, you name it. Everyone was talking about it. The Lord of the Rings had all of that. Why don’t we have another movie or trilogy on that scale, with that kind of public hype and cultural impact?

We have a few coming out, give it time, Dune would've been bigger if the films released every Christmas, they should've greenlit all of the Dune trilogy at once and film it all back to back but they were pussies.

I'm actually happy as fuck they didn't triple film it. There were rewrites and staff changes behind the scenes from Dune 1 to Dune 2, the whole film was like 80% less "Marvel" and it made an insane difference. If all three films were made in Dune 1's style... that shit would have sucked. Has everyone forgotten the fucking Jason Momoa comic relief character? Instead of shit like that we got kino like the arena scene in Dune 2.

And movies like Lord of the Rings were the run-of-the-mill movies at the time. Theaters are dying so the movie makers are afraid to do anything new. Also, I couldn't wait to get out of the house and away from my parents, but it seems like Gen X parents are best friends with their kids, so no need to leave the house to get away from them.

"and" means it was first written by Eric, then taken over by Denis, then Jon. "&" would mean they wrote in collaboration. that's why Eric isn't listed on Part 2. he probably wrote the first script they pitched with then took his pay and dipped to become an EP leaving Denis and Jon to rewrite to their hearts' content.
>producers
EPs changing doesn't mean anything. Those people just give the production money so they can have a credit on their name. The key names (actual producers) stay the same and are the only ones with any input.
>cast
it's the same cast except for the new characters. literally no idea what you're talking about.

I blame the new Star Wars trilogy or at least, for me, those were the last films I went to see and felt as a huge event. When TFA came out, going to the theater had exactly the feeling you described. In the end, the film felt pretty meh and disappointing, but there was still a small hope for the next ones. Needless to say, the other two were so shit they killed any remaining hype for the franchise. From that point my expectations for big blockbusters begin to decline and probably died because most of these films are tied to Disney and to the whole capeslop culture which I don't really care about or remakes and rehashes of old stuff, like Jurassic Park. Like someone pointed out, Dune kind of had that feeling. I also went to see Nosferatu in imax, and it had a bit of that vibe too, but nowhere near what big-budget blockbusters used to feel like back in the day.

It's as simple as Rian Johnson ruining Star Wars. In 2015, it was commonplace to expect some cosplay and endearing, cringeworthy fandom. Since Luke tossed the saber over his shoulder, that exact form of distaste was transferred to the audience. A very cynical, ill intention film sucked the wind out of the sails of millennials passing on Star Wars like how we got it from X/boomers. There's really no other IP that could be the harbinger of a return, either. LOTR isn't USA, HP isn't USA, Pokémon, etc. The jews flushed Luke Skywalker because the mythos is counter to Jewish intentions. Need disenfranchised youths, not wide-eyed hopefuls

I genuinely hate the LOTR films. I hate the soft focus, the weird mix of Victorian and dark ages garb, the uniformity, the bombastic soundtrack, the inserted girlbosses, McKellan, Serkis, Orlando "wooden elf" Bloom.

These movies suck nuts and they only get worse. The first was decent, the second and third are an absolute drag.

This sort of fantasy film suffers a lot from stiff dialogue and missed opportunities, the only reason they are so vaunted here is that even in a film like Red Dragon, just the most basic Hollywood thriller, they would put details in the background and set up scenes to have a richness and immersion to them. Filmmaking is stark and cheap and minimalist now, ungenerous.

But here it goes anyways. Late stage capitalism or rather a culture too heavily dependent on consumerism. There is a constant demand for entertainment, for satisfying immediate pleasure and then moving to the next thing. Companies get far more money over saturating the market than they would releasing a new entry every 40 years.

It´s a tradeoff, things are less special but people are constantly entertained and numbed so they can deal with their own existential dread.

Because films have been corporate-safe, risk-averse, and focus-group tested "content" dumps since the 2010s. We've been in the era of algorithmic factory filmmaking for a while now. Even the few current auteurs make movies for their own audiences' expectations (See: Eggers, Villeneuve, Nolan) and have to remain boxed-in to their own signatures. It's all so fucked up.
