This movie fails to capture how truly awful the office is, where is the woman forcing everyone to do secret santa and then complaining not one of the guys wants to help and they are all sexist? Where is the sound of high heels that sound like horses trotting around from office to office while they make fake laughs that sound like a donkey? Its so much worse than this movie depicts.

Now I work in a small warehouse where I do a mix of driving a forklift and going on the computer. I'm honestly so much happier here

Mike judge thought the idea of manually editing code written in the 70s, on computers from the 80s, in the 90s, so 40+ year old code could continue to be used in the 00s, as a “full time” temporary employee who was about to be laid off by “efficiency consultants” because the job was finished, was sufficiently psychotic/horrifying.

The worst thing about office jobs is being surrounded by bitchy women. They feed off each others negative energy. They look for weak people and target them behind their back. If that person moves to another job then there is a chance they may turn on one of their own. Their passive aggressive comments and condescending tone really wears you down after a while. I have never heard a group of guys doing that shit.

Manually editing software for y2k compliance in the year 1999 wasn’t “a stable job” and wouldn’t be outsourced to minorities because it wasn’t going to be an occupation after 1999

If you were alive in the late 90s, you’d remember tons of commercials for jobs “in computers” with no degrees/certifications required a 50k a year we’ll train you, because of the desperate crunch to ensure everything was y2k compliant. Then after the date rolled over all these people were laid off.

My approach was to call the lead hen on her shit then make it a point to not speak to her again unless it was directly work related; I wouldn’t even acknowledge her presence when we passed each other or were in the break room together. Man that bitch hated me. I also had another job lined up, so maybe do that.

I am so ready to call them out but have to bite my tongue in case im stuck with them another couple of months. One of them actually read my work when i wasnt looking and then said to a friend 20 minutes later than she was thinking about why we write down x on this y form because i hadnt done it.

I have to think though that there is a certain freedom in just ostracising yourself. The same way a christian will live a happy life despite his family disowning him. If I dont get the job I might just come out say that Id rather not have this conversation with you or why are you asking my opinion when you have no interest in what i have to say? At least you've said what you needed to say. Let them talk behind my back, they do it already.

There is and I enjoyed it, but it also made me a lightning rod and would be exceedingly difficult for someone even remotely sociable. The funny part to me was that some of the lesser hens would come to me to try and talk shit about the lead hen. I basically told them to fuck off as well if it wasn’t work related but it was an interesting object lesson in how the “pecking order” works. Have another job lined up, this is important.

This. I have worked both construction and now am working in an engineering firm. Both suck in their own ways. Offices are the worst for someone like me. I hate Teams meetings, the ping noise Teams makes, mandatory DEI training, working with women, working with cucked faggot men, being rewarded for performance with corporate pizza parties. I hate apps nights. I hate team building. I hate the clothes you’re forced to wear. I hate the language you’re forced to adopt. Moving forward, circle back, champion this, close out that. I hate the artificial lighting. Offices are truly the worst.
Call someone a faggot on a construction site and they either laugh or punch you. Call someone a faggot, or a bitch, or a pussy in an office and you’re fired, even if they’re being a faggot, bitch, or pussy. If women were in 100% control, every aspect of society would be some shade of office life.

>trying to take a Teams call, and colleagues are listening in and trying to get involved whilst you or the other person is talking

What I’d give for a cubicle. We switched buildings, and go figure part of that involved switching to an “open office.” I work helpdesk taking calls all day, and people calling in tell me it now sounds like a call center in India… what a difference 3 walls makes. I guess gen x/boomers thought they deserved offices? Or were they too stupid to understand that cubicle walls absorb sound?

Because the people who make, write, star in and like movies like this or agree with the sentiment "cubicles bad" actually belong at Starbucks, McDonald's or bartending. They want to be around others, socializing, and don't understand that SOMEone has to do the fucking work. If the social butterflies would just quit, so much more could get done that we might automatically enter a golden age.

My open office has security guards who literally get 5 minutes of action a week if they're lucky, so they do the rounds of standing in front of every single desk to talk about YouTube videos or what they're having for lunch or any number of inane topics.
One of the guards is the biggest Trump guy in the UK. He's constantly bringing up edgy political topics in a government building. He's so unfiltered that all it would take is a single HR report to get him disciplined/possibly sacked.
Then the people who are unofficial hall monitors

i have you beat. my last job (in which every step of the interview i asked for telework even saying i would take less pay for it and being told we could work something out) most the managers were telework but all the peons had to be in office so all meetings were teams meetings and my co-workers all sat in semi-open office desks next to me so any time they talked in a meeting i would hear an echo from hearing them irl and then a slight delay to hear them in the teams meeting

females, open office, dress codes, hr, and being autistically against telework are the things killing office work and making it nearly unbearable

best i ever got along at work was a warehouse job with two mexicans and we would spend all day calling each other racial slurs. the only co-workers i still talk to and its been almost a decade since i had the job

Even other women hate the intense passive-aggression, and fakeness, and pressure to invest time in pointless shit like Secret Santa or weekly meetings about nothing.

But if you say "that shit is dumb, leave me alone," the women and weak men act like you're a terrorist. It's an insane victim/groupthink cage. If you're strong minded, you're hated for not being a weak victim.

Manual labor is direct. If you contribute, you're immediately appreciated. There's not 5 layers of useless people emailing around. And it usually pays better than a stupid office gig.

This is the one upside about offices. Everything is recorded by email or cameras or both. If someone is fucking with you, document the date, time, and location of each occurrence. Do this quietly for 60-90 days. Then send it to a supervisor. The supervisor will 1000% be a drone idiot. They will be so scared at getting in trouble by the info, they will absolutely retaliate by putting you on a Performance Improvement Plan for a bullshit reason, or moving you for a bullshit reason, or outright firing you for a bullshit reason. This is what you want! Once they do so, file with the EEOC (free of charge) for retaliation. Then find an employment attorney who works on contingency (will take your case for free then collect 40% or so of what you win).

>This movie fails to capture how truly awful the office is
The point is it's not actually that bad so long as you choose to be a good dog. The premise of Office Space is that the office is only a bad place if you actually have the will to strike off on your own way, which 80% of people do not and most people will just take as an excuse to do the bare minimum out of spite, falsely believing they are worth more than they actually are, like the protagonisy who just ends up becoming a debris janny.

it doesnt work like that zoomie. its not a "personal" thing like i dont know how to be around people i dont like. if a non-white person or female doesnt like you in an office then its just constant HR issues, getting yelled at by bosses, assigned extra work for no benefit, unpaid overtime, passed over promotions, etc until youre fired or you quit

When you do know you've hit your lowpoint? When you start to believe those youtube money making ads? When you get excited because work has allowed everyone an extra 10 minutes at lunch? When you date a woman as miserable as you and you are forced to stay in your dead end job to support her and the kids? When you reach retirement age and the young boss drops hints about lesser hours?

white collar working in 2001:
>humming fluorescent tube lighting
>whirring and clicking of ancient hard drives and fans
>some crappy radio playing top 40 hits all day
>easy, but relatively boring work
>drinks in the pub with the decent colleagues makes it worth it

white collar working in 2025:

If you actually believe in this mindset, you have to stop.

Corporations can make money without absolutely fucking workers. It's that simple.

They want us fighting each other to get dicked in the ass. They *don't* want us respecting each other and ourselves and being like "Hey is it really necessary for you to treat me like shit? Let's go to court and find out."

Maybe because of my industry but I have the opposite problem. I hate how they're always happy all the time, as they come up with the dumbest shit imaginable (for someone else to work on). And of course they giggle constantly because they know their ideas are shit and use cuteness to deflect any criticism. You aren't allowed to make them cry which means you aren't allowed to critique or overhaul their dumbass ideas in any way

i think its some sort of horseshoe shit where the anger of white men at the state of things and the untouchability of super-POC allowing them to act however they want both result in a similar personality sometimes. someone whos angry at bullshit and just wants to get shit done and leave all the bullshit behind because they have other shit to think/worry about than a dumb fucking office job and its politics

I think I’ve got you beat. I once was in a Teams meeting where every single person in the meeting was in the office sitting next to each other at their open plan desks. We could have gone to a conference room, they were there and available. No one thought this was odd. Work is like high school in that it’s such a historical irregularity to be forced to interact all day in a work environment with complete strangers.

I was a walmart assistant GM equivalent, its true there too. They know HR will never touch them so they will call out bad customers shit and tell shitty managers to fuck off. As long as you don't expect above the job description they are good employees. Kind of like union guys, or people who did years as an E3 in the service. They have to be fat and over 35 though.
