unironically should have been split into two movies, the adaptation should have been a trilogy to give Paul and Chani more time to develop as characters (their casting not being great aside) and not mandate a lot of stuff being cut like Alia and Kynes. a middle movie would also have allowed the story to spend more time on Paul coming to understand the Fremen way of life, feel his mind expanding, and let the movies explore the ecology of Arrakis which would give a lot more depth to themes of desert power and using the Fremen religion that just get glossed over during the second half of the Dune 2 when they are just throwing plot points at you non fucking stop but were major parts of the book

Harah is awarded to Paul as spoils for killing Jamis, but he NEVER touches her. Paul loses his virginity to Chain and she's the only woman he ever sleeps with. Harah becomes head of Muad'dib's household and by Children of Dune is an influential leader among the Fremen. I'm pretty sure Stilgar eventually married her.

I like Harah, and her chapter with Alia where she shows her love for the girl despite everyone else being afraid of her is a favorite of mine. But she is a tertiary character, one not essential to the bare bones plot. Any adaptation has to make sacrifices.

Watched this last night, 4k Arrow video remaster.
It's great how Lynch communicated as much of the weirdness and overall flavor from the books as he could in so little time.
Especially when comparing it to how little of the soul of the books Villeneuve retained with so much time to do it with.

Dune is a jewish futuristic fantasy about repeating European history in space except with magic jew sorceresses who control the various destinies of the powerful using either sex or drugs or magic verbal manipulation powers to install themselves as things like Duchesses of the original worlds which Jessica does at the end of the story. Herbert presented himself as conservative but was a San Fransisco liberal and honestly I don't think he wrote much of the story himself. His wife and some of his sketchy psychologist friends probably had a hand in it. I was pretty surprised when the first movie was made I thought this moive wouldn't be allowed in the middle of wokeism. But looking into the lore a few weeks ago I can see why.

Villeneuve is a pleb with absolutely zero style.

Now I know that Ridley Scott isn't popular these days with the trash he's made out of the Alien franchise as of late but if on his A game he would have made Dune look incredible which is the only good thing I can say about Gladiator 2 but that was only because he brought back John Matheson as the DP as he had lensed the first Gladiator along with Hannibal, X-Men: First Class and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and why the cinematography in those movies is soo good!

The irony is that Scott was supposed to make Dune after Alien but the project fell apart due to his brother dying and that the book couldn't be condensed into a single film.

And as much as I dislike Lynch's version at least he swung for the fences and gave us something visually distinctive and memorable.

I can't say the same thing about Villeneuve's adaptation and including Blade Runner 2049 which are both bland and reflect a mind with no imagination!!!FACT!!!

Zendaya is an uggo and her character is rewritten to be an annoying shrew for no reason, which robs every romance scene of all chemistry and generally makes her presence on screen more unpleasant than it has to be.
Everyone is whispering, but the music is some woman screeching really loudly while giant machines emit massive bass blasts that make your speakers fart and vibrate.
And in general it has the feel of modern capeshit which by default makes it far less interesting than the books or even the Lynch movie.

No mommy vibes and Zendaya was a misfire. I wasn't a huge fan of the slow, atmospheric pacing of the first but from that to a more studio friendly, plot point to plot point, blockbuster style editing made me miss it a bit.

I did enjoy it, though. Javier Bardem was the best part.
