I think for Superman's (or any kryptonian's) powers to work there would need to be a field around him that he unconsciously can also psychically project further. The enormous things Superman lifts remain structurally intact in ways that aren't possible unless this is true. It makes no sense when Superman hits a regular human that they go flying 30 feet through the air and are knocked out, but otherwise fine. Unless he's able to manipulate fundamental forces.
This is also tidies up how he's able to control his strength. Anything he interacts with he subconsciously projects his own field onto. Another way of saying he makes them as strong as him.
