addicts can't. It's no more possible for most of them to stop than it is for you to stop breathing - they don't care if they get in trouble, lose friends, lose their freedom, lose their job, hell even their life

Alcohol withdrawals can cause seizures and hallucinations or straight up kill you, It's not something you can stop overnight and if you mess up you have to start over again.
