Believe it or not, it's not WHAT you know at all. Try and get into a union and then make connections. If you follow the yellow signs that have arrows pointing to things, it means they're filming something there. Go and ask questions. I knew one guy that got by starting as a security guard (non union) and then got picked up as a P.A. (I believe union) and then he built his hours laying out all the cables and shit (I think they call it grip) and now he makes like fucking $2 Million a year working for the lighting department or something...they have a name.

The reason I'm telling you this is because there's camera people that got in that exact same way. I guess you can go to film school, I think they recruit production assistants through those....but I'd imagine they're expensive.

Damn, I was literally in your exact same shoes, OP

>be high school student
>career research project for English class
>Want to become a cinematographer or something to do with making films
>Ask people online about it and many people tell me not to do it because its too hard of a field to get into
>Decide not to do it
>nearly 20 years have gone by now and I wouldn't be any better off had I just done what I wanted to do instead

Don't wait OP, just do it, take the first step and build from there
