so when the original group chose that the reacting girl would be black, was that an explicit order, like "she MUST be black" or is it more of a subtle groupthink thing where they all tacitly agree with each other, like someone floats the word "diverse" and then they all nod and later the casting agent gets one asking for "diversity" and she correctly intuits that that means black. i'm always curious about the logistics of this stuff, the moment to moment nitty gritty

More the latter, except it's like a lying game where every white man in the room is suspicious about where every other white man is at, mentally.
It's too risky to sus each other out, so you have to slowly use dogwhistles and subtly discern if another guy is secretly based or not.
It's like being gay, or like hating Big Brother in Oceania. Everyone just assumes that they need to be as fucking gay as possible or they'll be fired, but bizarrely enough, even in Hollywood I think normal people outnumber the weirdos. They're just too domesticated cowed to do shit.
