This ended with Ruth killing Javier, and it wrapping up after that, with her still alive. Then Netflix changed the order to 14 episodes so that they could split it into two "parts" and more or less get two season releases out of one season, and the story had to get stretched out. So Javier died at the start of Part 2 instead, and they expanded the role of his mother, in a fairly nonsensical way where her motivations were hard to even follow and seemed to change from scene to scene. And of course the way the story played out in the expanded version, they landed on killing off Ruth in the finale as the apparent correct move for the story.
