I think Alien 3 & 4 as a concept aiming for prison stories could have been amazing if they put actual writers in charge of it which know how to write prison stories & labrat stories. Stephen King's Shawshank Redemption was fucking amazing and I had to do a doubletake on how could the faggot who wrote that corny clown horror story for children(which for some reason includes a sex scene where they grow to adults in order to escape the sewer cause apparently everyone forgot to bring rope or a ladder with them) could manage to create such a mature and engaging story such as The Shawshank Redemption? it's like the writer behind Manhunter/Red Dragon wrote Shawshank Redemption ... not Stephen Spiel- Stephen King. Alien Alien 3 & 4 should have been spin-offs without Ripley. Ripley felt like a third wheel and it really felt off how the doctor died after an entire goddamn hour after so much focus on him. Felt like they should have spent that focus on the prisoners instead.

I think it's a bad film on the whole. Brutally offing Newt and Hicks leaves a bad taste in your mouth from the start, they kill off the two most interesting characters back to back at the halfway point, the rotoscoped Alien SFX are worse than Resurrection, and then the third act is a drawn out, poorly paced brown mess of tunnels.
But at the same time, there's just something about it, you know? I really love the aesthetic, the performances are all consistently great right down to the lowest no-name prisoner, and I appreciate what the film tried to do even when it's so clearly been through development hell and barely works as is. It should have been far better than it was.
