'pop' music doesn't exist anymore. pop is short for popular, because the genre is supposed to represent the mainstream standards that everyone is familiar with. But nowadays, nobody listens to the same music as anyone else, we're all isolated into our own niches and subcultures. there will never again be musicians or bands like Elvis or the Beatles or Michael Jackson who capture the spirit and attention of an entire generation.

no. the internet and MP3s killed radio, which killed the Top 40 format, which killed pop music. There has never been a point since the dawn of radio where pop music didn't exist. Elvis was the top selling musician every year from 1955 until the early 80s, there will never be a music act with that sort of cultural staying power ever again. modern "pop" acts arrive, get shilled, and then burn out within a year because they can't build a fanbase. remember Ice Spice? remember Billie Eilish? neither do I.

It's a shitty music biopic that came out after a parody movie drove the last nail in the coffin of the genre. Releasing a music biopic right after the Weird Al movie is like releasing a star-studded disaster movie right after Airplane! came out

I think most Americans' only exposure to Robbie Williams was his song "Millennium" that was included on the "Now That's What I Call Music! 2" compilation album in 1999. And that's it. I don't think it even really appeared on radio stations that much.

As far as I'm aware, those racing movies *don't* presume you know about the events they depict. Ford v Ferrari goes into detail on the rivalry, the build up, etc. Better Man, with it's monkey conceit, assumes you do know who the subject is. The whole monkey idea, basically portraying a famous, troubled man as a primate, is predicated on you knowing at least a little bit about the guy himself. A movie about the Beatles where the Beatles are all portrayed as anthropomorphic cats could make sense; a movie that portrays mid-century science fiction author Cordwainer Smith as a reluctant cow would be incomprehensible to anyone not deeply read in on his work.

That's the only time I remember him being noteworthy in the US. The song wasn't even that good but he had a lot of marketing hype behind him. Even then he seemed forced, and fell out of the public's consciousness once the marketing bucks ran out.

this comic is 100% reliant on the implication that the guy is unreasonably upset. it's like those internet comics where the author draws themselves winning an argument vs an incensed illogical idiot strawman
otherwise it's a completely normal sentiment, why would you watch a biopic (?) with middling reviews about someone you've never heard of with a cast you've never heard of in an uninteresting setting? most people didn't know or care about it, I never heard of it before this whole meme
