The pace and direction of the show is insane, especially in the 2nd season. Because it is not an adaptation of something and an anime original, thing go a mile a minute. It's taking all the fat you'd associate with a long running shonen anime and cutting that away. This is more explicit in the 2nd season when a new generation of mech is introduced every other episode. But even the first season is just taking a high concept of a guy who has the powers to mind control people to a limited extent and using that to wage war on a nation. So frenetic pace + high concept + perfect ending = something that stayed with people for a long time.

My theory has always been that it was released during a low point in the quality of anime (some say it’s been ever since), so in an era of sub par anime it stood out. So people look back on it through rose colored glasses.

It aged horribly imo.

Mecha anime stronhold Sunrise wanted their own Death Note because it was being a hit, so Code Geass was made. Sunrise is the cancer of anime industry making everything "Mechas + something trendy" for the last 30 years, they must be stopped

Well for one unlike the main character Light from Death Note who died a loser and ultimately didn't accomplish his goals it's no surprise Lelouch really alleviated Code Geass with a protagonist that not only had character development, but made good on what he set out to do, even as far back as keeping to his "the only ones that should kill or those that are prepared to be killed" as he himself was at the end as yeah people like a male main character that isn't a bitch.
