America during the 40's was way less bloodthirsty. We thought we were going to sail down to the Philippines and have a big fuck off battleship centric naval battle with the Japs, and the loser would go home, and that would be the end of the war. The "murder every last jap" came after Guam and Guadalcanal when we actually understood what we were dealing with. The Japs taught us that we were going to have to murder every last one of them because they would never surrender.

Don't start wars if you're not able to finish it or if you're going to cry about it when you lose. Any means is justifiable especially when they actually met the ends.

Boomers and /k/ fags who say this have never watched this film. The movie depicts the American atrocities against Japan negatively, but not from an anti-American PoV. Rather, it depicts them as a Gotterdammerung and divine punishment for Japan's actions during the war, as they are now enduring what they inflicted upon countless nations and peoples for nearly a decade; and it is the children, elderly, and civilians of Japan uninvolved in the war who suffer the most from the actions, worldviews, and delusions of Tojo and his ilk.
That is why it is such a powerful, profound, and deeply sad anti-war film. It is all about how the people least involved in war are most often the victims of it.
