it's really a m1a1 thompson smg and that's just part of the working gun under all the extra stuff they put on top of it - IIRC some of them were just props and there was a few working guns for the action scenes that they rotated between cast members for the scenes where they actually shoot stuff
the front is a cut down shotgun that was meant to be a futuristic grenade launcher and they slapped the two together and put some extra kit stuff all over it to make it sci-fi
so they are actual functioning guns

That was pretty common in hollywood movies. There are whole companies that are just licensed armorers for the studios who have a forgotten weapons tier vault full of shit they can slap some plastic and LED's onto to make your movies space gunz.

Yeah. You’d need a way to manually cycle the gun to the first round in the chamber right after inserting the magazine. The gun’s self-loading mechanism would take care of reloading after that.

Caseless is a meme though. There were insurmountable problems with cook-off, and the gun’s internals looked like a clock. The current meta is high pressure ammunition (which serves a similar function in lightening total cartridge mass) and maybe in the future, cased-telescoped, though I personally think CT is a meme also. You gain nothing performance-wise for a given cartridge diameter and overall length. The only real benefit is the weight savings from using a polymer case.
