yeah joe I was such a hardcore kid man...I grew up around the hood. When I was young, I had nothing. No money, could barely afford a hot dinner. My parents, real working class people. But when they started hitting us one or two times every week, I thought maybe it was time to shut up business. But my friend comes up to me and says "I know a guy, he'll take care of it". So he sends over this kid: short, dark, couldn't have been more than, what, nineteen at the time? but he has these really intense eyes. So he says to me, he says "I'll take care of your little problem, I only ask one thing in return". And I say "sure thing, what you want? money? I'll give you points on every dollar made" and he just shakes his head and says "nah man, when I fix your problem, I want you to move your game somewhere else. No more bothering these working class people up in these buildings, no more late night carousing, no more hustling grandmas as they go out to buy their evening newspaper, got it?" I almost burst out laughing, I mean, what gives this yo-yo the right to tell me how to run things? But I figure why the hell not: so we agree and shake hands. Come the next evening, he shows up again, with a fresh cut across his cheek, and calmly says “you ain’t got a problem no more, now get outta here”. And like he said, we didn’t have a problem no more. No more stickup crews bothering us, hell, even some of the old players came back with money for debts they owed. Didn’t explain why, but I knew.

Anyway, found out later his real name was Jon, some half italian, half polack, half God knows what, kid who had built something of a reputation for stepping up to some really heavy hitters.

I shit you not I ran in to Jon a couple months back at a bar in Jersey, still get shills thinkin about it. These 3 guys barged in, acted like clowns the entire night, after getting rejected by a female group they began getting aggressive. Jon, sitting alone at the counter, watched. A man’s man, quiet, broad-shouldered, and built like a brick wall. He stood, walked over, and said calmly, “You’ve got ten seconds to leave.”

They laughed.

One swung. Jon caught his wrist, dropped him. Another lunged, Jon slammed him into the jukebox. The third ran. Someone yelled "Burn local!".

Jon checked on the women, nodded to the bartender, and walked back into the rain. No fanfare. Just a man who did what needed doing.
