The biggest western animations based on comics are either mid in terms of animation (invincible) or targeted at children (spiderverse).

We crippled the comic book industry in the 50s due to a prominent psychologist claiming they could corrupt the youth, thus forcing them to produce exclusively kid friendly bullshit for decades and killing the market. By the time they stopped censoring themselves other mediums had risen up and comics had no chance to recover their once genuinely massive cultural relevance.
Places like Japan and France never had this happen, so they still have relatively good markets for the medium despite it being somewhat outdated(manga is way more popular and mainstream than anime in Japan).
