>if I recall the Japanese made a whole cinematic universe about this.

The only reason why they brought Godzilla back after Raids again was due to prodding from American producers who wanted drive-in fodder, and Toho continued working with Americans well into the Showa era, hence the presence of American actor Nick Adams in Invasion of Astro Monster and War of the Gargantuas.

They kept it going from the 60s into the 70s because it caught on with kids, Gamera became a thing, and Tokusatsu as a genre was taking off.

You like Godzilla in color? Thank America.

Clover deserves a free pass since it's the one who invented (or at least popularized) the archetype in the first place. It's a solid unique design that everyone else has been chasing. In my opinion MUTO is also a fantastic variation of the design. Yes it utilizes the now cliche leg structure, but it's general proportions and shape mix it up significantly. I really adore all the hard angles and flat surfaces. It makes it feel almost like a machine transitioned into an organic form. Easily one of my favorite western monster designs in decades.

It's not /tv/ but porn aside, the Wraith is genuinely another all-timer and its actual in-game animations make it even better. Evolve in general had amazing designs. Even the more generic ones still had a lot of detail put into things like their skin texture or facial structure that made them stand out a bit more when you got a good look at them.

I wish there was a decent monster movie based on the Beast of Gevaudan. Brotherhood of the Wolf was full of too much faggy political shit. Just give me a wolf or whatever eating people while the King's personal gunman desperately tries to hunt it down. It even has the perfect sequel hook because another one started a second killing spree about a year later, but no one cared anymore by then.
I don't know how you'd make the monster all that interesting though. I think the prevailing theory is that it was just a wolf crossbred with a big mastiff type dog. I guess you could make it horse-sized and frame it as someone's exaggerated recollections.

1. Most of those films came out at a time where "gritty realism" was the norm for American action movies and even ones with fantastical elements needed to have muted colors and conservative designs.
2. It was likely easier translate grey, smooth, vaguely humanoid, designs to CGI.
3. Those films in particular were either horror or leaning into horror and neither wanted or needed monsters with colorful or intricate designs

The -ira/-illa in Gojira/Godzilla's name also comes from gorira/gorilla because Godzilla is simultaneously a "knockoff" of 20000 Fathoms and King Kong (which had a big rerelease at the time.)
"Knockoff" is in quotes because obviously the crew made a much better and more unique film than the suits at Toho who were chasing a quick buck intended.

I agree with you that the MUTO gets too much flak, but I also think Cloverfield gets too much of a pass. Cloverfield's limbs are far too thin and spread out from its center of mass to believably bear it's weight. MUTO is very pleasing because of how sturdy, vertical, and columnar it is. Makes it much easier to buy that this things limbs could actually hold it up.

It is. I'm not saying they're perfect, they definitely have a variety of problems that need fixing, but overall they've been pretty solid so far, and they've made Godzilla FUN again. As amazing as Minus One and Shin were, they're hardly feel good "Godzilla saves the day" films, so it's nice to have both ends of the Godzilla spectrum active at the same time. Plus, it's nice that the other monsters have been a good mix of Toho classics and new creations, instead of just completely one or the other.
>Godzilla 2014 was good
I used to really like 2014 but over time it's gotten worse and worse in my eyes. The somber tone is perfect but I can't get over the "keep away" routine with the monsters (yes, Gareth, we've all seen Jaws), killing off the heart and soul of the story (Bryan Cranston's character) half an hour in, and what a useless sack of shit Aaron Taylor Johnson's character actually is.

Including future predator feels bad because it was the original design that everyone else just ripped off because it was from an obscure British TV show that no one in America would have heard about. The fact that it was ripped off so heavily is proof that it's design was good.

Also the future predator has an in-universe explanation for why it has a body plan where it's arms are longer than it's legs. It's supposed to have evolved from bats so it's arms and fingers being longer is in reference to fact that bats have long arms and fingers.

Basically super-aliens (god?) made two lineages of life, the life you find on earth and angels. They spawn from two different moons and usually a planet only gets one of the moons.
