Is f1 actually like this in irl? Dudes crashing into each other on purpose or sabotaging the course by crashing into it or purposely fucking up their cars for flags and shit? I only ever played Nascar heat 2002 and it was a good idea to not touch other cars

Nascar heat based. I used to just go the other way at the start of races to make epic crashes.

No. Its extremeley boring to watch 99% of the time.
It was quite funny how Pitt in this was some kind of 2000iq genius tactician

they're illegal and would never happen. the only thing realistic about the movie is that kmag really was a shit driver that crashed into people all the time.

It's a stupid hollywood movie that's nothing like the actual sport. The "racing plot" is, though, inspired from the 2008 "crashgate" scandal, where one driver crashed on purpose to bring out the safety car, thus helping his teammate. The plot was exposed and severely punished.

The strat where he held up the pack to let his teammate stay in a top spot is realistic. That was done in a race this year, I think Monaco. You can't really pass at Monaco so this one guy purposefully held the majority of the racers some 20 seconds behind the leaders so that his teammate could stay in a top spot.

All the penalty strats don't work because they come with fines and damage your reputation as a driver. They do work in the movie because Pitt is a one-time driver and the team has nothing to lose as far as finances and investors. So the penalties don't matter and Pitt's reputation doesn't matter since he isn't looking to stay in F1.
