A lot of anime has the depth of hunger games or twilight except its for men.

I tried to get into anime by myself a long time ago and looked up movies to watch which were "high quality" and it was all the same thing.

Classic anime is pretty good, however.

it's anti-normalfag, literally a subversion of typical "magic girl" anime, which is why you got filtered, it's too much of a culture-shock.
This is the problem with a lot of anime fans, especially newer ones, they don't know the difference between normalfag anime (DBZ), and non-normalfag anime (made in abyss, madoka ). And throw their friends into the deep end with bad recommendations.
