It's hard for rationalist types to understand, but many if not most humans are genetically religious and a follower. It actually wouldn't be very good for the human species if everyone wanted to lead and disagree. Therefore most are on the agreeable, follower side of the spectrum, with some to a crazy degree.

"free thinking" hippie westerners falling for the hare krisnha thing in the 60s 70s is hilarious.
Joining a totalatarian alien cult that treats you like literal slaves, controls your diet and works you like a dog just to worship the head guy and founder like a god

Lot of reddit atheists in this thread

Cults gain members by acting nice and targeting emotionally vulnerable people, they provide a feeling of community the actual beliefs they have are irrelevant, then they get you alone and start using peer pressure and rituals to change your mind set, often they do this by reminding you its important to try new things or be open to other belief systems even if they seem kind of odd at first

For example you get into a room with them and they all start holding each other's hands and pray or sing, they don't ask you to do it they just extend their hands out and act like you want to go along, people are raised to be polite and saying no would create an aura of tension and rejection in the air, so many begin to hold hands and sing even if they don't want to, this creates a feeling of belonging, they gradually do similar rituals and slowly like a drug dealer get you hooked by using human's in built desire for a close knit community. Then they try to cut you off of other people who could provide you the same feeling of community like family or friends.

They then have some male who plays the role of father of the cult he generally will present himself as humble and the other cult members will be the ones to glorify him, see Augustus Caesar

Most religions are not cults because its an unstable system that has difficulty surviving the death of its leader.

Really cults are not that different from mainstream society, even as a child you are taught to obey teachers without question and have unfounded respect for them regardless of competence or temperament the state is just less effective at it, and despite society's obsession with being your own person and how great going against the mold is that never is how its played out in person. Imagine standing up and saying that you don't like native American culture because of its reliance on superstitious rituals, even with no native americans in your class you would likely be shamed.

One of the basic human needs is the need to belong. Cults will accept and tolerate individuals that have otherwise no friends and/or are alienated from their families.

The mass suicide was probably disastrous advertising for Kool-Aid, since I don't think you're the only one who can't drink it because of the cult, and the irony is that they didn't even use actual Kool-Aid, but an off-brand knockoff called Flavor-Aid.

I'm such an instinctual, obnoxious contrarian that I struggle to even admit in real life that The Shawshank Redemption is a really good film, so cults are just beyond my comprehension. If I ever joined a Jim Jones sermon I would probably raise my hand constantly and basically be pic related, and I don't think I am alone regarding this ITT.

You ever had a relative convinced that they were chatting with a celebrity or something like that? Peoples grandmas start sending half their pensions to "Tom Cruise" or someone and its not like they have dementia or are retarded, theyre just old and lonely and have so little going on in their lives that even the most blatant lie is preferable to the truth. So they make themselves believe it. Just like every single parasocial lonely faggot in the world. A better question is why real cults arent MORE common. Just imagine how many lonely people there are right now just begging for human connection in any way

You're not wrong. Polite society is really just one large cult. There is no healthy reason why most girls I know would break down in tears if I simply questioned the Holocaust narrative in front of them. They're not Jewish, they don't have any relatives with history from German camps, they have no real connection the the events whatsoever, and yet here we are. The meta cult is a powerful thing, maybe even the most powerful.

In the 60s it was just about smoking weed. People wanted to get high, lots of various Indian cults held some sacred right to smoking weed for shit. It's just about getting high and finding excuses for it so they can tell cops to fuck off they have a core belief system that says it's okay to smoke.

Their whole
>Free Thinking
was just about the free thinking that weed is not illegal or bad, totally free!
