What makes it even worse is they're desperate to model themselves on the '80s chads who looked like that. Problem is the '80s chads looked like chads. The zoomers either look like pedophiles, scruffy old tramps, or like they're trying to grow bumfluff so they can get served at the cornershop. I blame low T.

When I was a kid the only people who drank from jars were hobos and tramps. No one wanted them touching their good glasses so they would give them an old jam jar or whatever to drink from.
Now a bunch of retards do it unironically to look cool. Pity they aren't being smashed in the face with them instead.

I remember Gavin had Colin Flaherty on, and Flaherty imitated Killer Mike rapping "When we nigger gon' unite and kill these police muthafuckas" which he did pretty accurately except a bit stiff
Gavin then realized it was a Run The Jewels song and said "oh this is my friend El-P" and tried to convince Flaherty that rap, despite having some offensive lyrics, is good. Flaherty was not convinced.

I have fond memories of the time because it was the best couple of years of my life when it was peaking in popularity. But I absolutely fucking hated the genre and style.
Especially those sticks with a little mustaches and top hats attached to them that EVERY SINGLE photo booth area had at parties and weddings.
Every fucking one.

I remember that too. People are trying to romanticize the late '00s early '10s now by calling it "indie sleaze" and trying to pretend like it was some great art movement. I was there. It was smelly and gross. People often didn't wear shoes (even in nyc) or if they did, they'd put them on with no socks. Girls didn't shave their pits and it almost seemed like it was supposed to be cool not to shower so parties in the summer would fucking REEK of extra spicy BO and feet. It fucking sucked. And suddenly all these city kids were ALL ABOUT pickling everything, raising goats/chickens, knitting, etc.

And the music sucked ass and if you weren't into it, people looked at you like you had no taste. But where the fuck are Fleet Foxes, Matt and Kim, Vampire Weekend, Beach House, or any of the other flavors of the month now? They either don't exist anymore, or play legacy tours where they can't play their hit until the very last encore because they know everyone will fucking leave after they hear that one song.

I don't hate the hipster lumberjack look on principle, but there are very few people who can pull it off.

I liked the aesthetic but the music itself is just not fun. Like the songs are basically all about living in the “now” (even though the “now” isn’t all that great) and enjoying your youth in the most vague ways possible.

This is funny. Totally stealing the image, but in practice nobody I remember fit neatly into these categories. Most people mixed and matched and changed daily. The people who really commit to one thing or another were usually trying to make that look the entirety of their personality (which usually correlated somehow to branding. The "vintage queen" was usually an aspiring model who found that she could find more success by embracing that niche than by trying to go mainstream).

You know nothing about me or what I listen to. A lot of the stuff I listen to isn't cool, but the artists have been putting stuff out for decades. When you say "that's just music, for the most part" what you actually mean is "That's just *pop music, for the most part". Bands are typically a flash in the pan.

*pop meaning derives from popular styles of music, not that the artist is actually popular. This is opposed to "concert music" (or what people often incorrectly classify as "classical"), experimental, jazz, etc.

I think the renewed interest in real barber culture was a good thing. Some of the lumberjack dudes got fucking ridiculous, but most people didn't commit to the costume 100% and would just borrow parts of the look. I'm not mad at men taking more care trimming and grooming their beards/facial hair, getting tight fades and combing their hair into a neat pompadour. That plus the plain T shirt, fitted jeans, and either boots or chucks isn't really "lumberjack"...it's just classic cool.

That's way better than the novelty mullet, crustache, rapist glasses, and hawaiian shirt. Dudes just look sloppy as fuck. It was annoying that, for the longest time, it was hard to find casual button down shirts that didn't make you look like Screech from Saved by the Bell. Everything had fucking hotdogs or lobsters or anchors on them. And in the last few years, cuts have gotten bigger and sloppier and shirts often don't have a top button. It's like people gave the fuck up during COVID and then brands were like "fuck it, that's the look now".

whiskey in general is for faggots that desperately want to prove how unfaggoty they are so they do performatively masculine things like talk about how much they love whiskey. Bulleit in particular is a brand that appeals to these homos the most, it's not a straightforward common man's get drunk whiskey like Jim Beam or Jack Daniels, and these faggots are too poor to afford really expensive scotch, so Bulleit is the perfect "The aesthetic of THIS whiskey means I'm better than you" without being too expensive.

fwiw, the places that serve food with ridiculous presentations like that aren't actually respected in real foodie culture. They exist for social media influencers who care more about taking a stupid picture than actually eating good food.
The Ball Jar drinking glasses is kind of gimmicky too, but at least it's somewhat practical. When someone inevitably breaks one, they're super easy and cheap to replace and there's not really much difference from drinking out of a jar than there is from drinking out of a glass.

Whiskey nerd and ex bartender here. Bulleit is not great. It's not the worst, but it's very overpriced and only propped up by their advertising campaign. If you blind taste it against other bourbons or ryes, you'll notice an unpleasant acrid finish to it.
It's always a little eye roll inducing when some fucking "guy's guy" proclaims they only drink Bulleit.

I disagree with >>212494574 in that there are things to legitimately enjoy in whiskey and whisky. The problem is that a lot of people like the image of being a whisk(e)y drinker more than they actually enjoy the whisk(e)y itself and don't really have the palate to distinguish between what they like and what they don't. They drink whatever people tell them is good, and they drink it in a way that they think makes them real men.

I can't count the number of times some fucking idiot had demanded to drink cask strength booze neat (no ice, no water for those who don't know). It's because they're under the impression that's how "real men" drink booze, but cask strength whisk(e)y is intended to be diluted. How much you dilute it and how you do it is up to you according to taste. They don't water it down for you because you can temper it how you want, but it DOES need tempering. Otherwise it just tastes like burning. The dickheads that drink it straight are either trying to get fucked up (in which case, there are cheaper ways to do that), or they're trying to prove how manly they are (in which case, they're just shouting to anyone who knows anything about booze that they're an insecure retard).

Putting Bulleit in a whiskey sour is a waste of money. Even more so than putting it in a bourbon old fashioned. There are better mixing whiskeys that are cheaper. If you're looking for a mixing bourbon, Four Roses yellow label (their cheap stuff) is really fucking good for sours. For an old fashioned or manhattan, first, rye will be better and in which case I'd go for something like Rittenhouse or Old Overholt. If you do Old Overholdt, either use the bottled in bond or blend it with Rittenhouse...the stirred drinks tend to benefit from a bit of a stiffer proof. If you really want to go for a bourbon, Four Roses or Old Forrester would be good calls. (The Old Forrester rye is fucking phenomenal too, but harder to find).

Back in the day, W.L. Weller was really god damned good and super affordable. People didn't like the sound of it because "Weller" sounded like it was a cheap well spirit, so sometimes people would actually request we use something other than that in drinks. Fast forward to the height of the Pappy Van Winkle craze, and one of the brothers from that distillery said "You know, when I can't get Pappy, I drink W.L. Weller. It's basically the same thing, and Pappy actually learned everything he knew about making whiskey by working at that distillery" and then all of the sudden dickheads everywhere wanted it. Now it's hard to find and expensive on the secondary market.

Just goes to show that most people don't know good booze when they have it. They base their decisions on prestige.

>Some of these guys were laid back libertarians, who then became more reactionary.
A lot of these guys were basically liberals, but with an "edgy" streak or something. Gavin used to write articles for Vice where he shat on wiggers or was critical of black subcultures as retarded that would be a big no no in todays hipster environment.

And it was kind of normal for guys in that scene to casually say shit like "faggot" or "nigger" in a post ironic comedic way. Like Zach Galifianakis who was like the comedic darling of that scene would call people faggots under his breath as a joke.

The right wing hipster thing really originated after 9/11 though when people like Gavin had a "bomb these sand niggers to hell!" reaction while the more far left ones had a "this is our fault, we deserve this!" reaction. But that whole laid back, chill with people you disagree with atmosphere was killed in 2015-2016 with Trump. Before that, really right wing people like Jim Goad and really left wingers like Patton Oswalt were friends.

While it wasn't initially intended to be anything anyone took seriously, photographers noticed that the photos it took tended to be unpredictable and kind of dreamy in quality (due in part to light leaks, shitty optics, and the inability to purposefully focus on anything).
You tend to approximately frame photos and focusing on stuff is a guessing game. You can estimate how far the subject is and adjust based on that. The unpredictable and dreamy photos those cameras take is part of the charm, though, and both cameras have super dedicated photographers that have created amazing work using them.

I drink it with a couple of ice cubes just to dilute it a bit and chill it I know it's not cask strength that's just my preference. I think the water opens up the flavours a bit more.

Most of the shit you are talking about is ego, let go of your ego and drink and style yourself how you want you don't have to fit a mold.

What's funny to me is how all of these hipsters were emo and scene just a year before this aesthetic.

It's like they all had a fucking conference one day and decided to immediately change aesthetics.

There wasn't a transition period either. I went to college one day and all the emos disappeared and these hipsters just appeared instead.

Today a roll of film and development could cost you $30+ per roll

Yes and no. Holga and Diana cameras did become a sort of fashion accessory at one point (partially because at that time it was cool to be an artist and being a "photographer" was one of the easier ways to buy into that identity without having to have dedicated a decade of your life actually learning how to play an instrument, draw, paint, etc), but there's valid work being made with them too. Just because they're cheap and kind of shitty doesn't mean they can't be used for real work. History is littered with people who saw the aesthetic potential of cheap tools that weren't taken seriously.
Pinhole camera photography is also a thing, and those cameras can be made DIY with a fucking cardboard box, some tape, and a pushpin.

I realized I was a fucking nigger because I had the constant urge to play "knockout game" on these motherfuckers.

It was also the first time I noticed people having fake personalities. As in pretending to like games they didn't actually play or like. Or pretend to listen to music/play instruments they didn't actually like.

I never understood why they did that. Before no one bothered with faking parts of their personality. People just did what they liked. And afterwards it made sense because of a fully online world and social media being a potential career path so there is an incentive for young people to be fake. I just never understood them.

When I think of hipster music, I tend to think more of bands like Vampire Weekend, Beach House, Animal Collective, The XX, Coco Rosie, MGMT...
Aphex Twin was actually a paradigm shifting artist. He was popular amongst hipster dickheads too, but he's massively important to the development of electronic music and arguably music production in general. Godspeed You Black Emperor were pretentious as fuck (and I'm not a huge fan of their music), but they also helped kickstart an entire genre of post-rock music. I'd put both artists in a different category than typical hipster artists.

The prices are still reasonable at retail, but all the bottles get snapped up immediately and sold on the secondary market. $99 is on the lower side. I've seen that shit going for over $250.
I have an unopened bottle of William Larue Weller single barrel that apparently is worth $3k as well as a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Lot B both from around 2008. I got them at different times as a gift from the bar owner as a thank you/apology for leaving me in the weeds understaffed during busy weekends. They were nice gifts back then, but they're REALLY nice gifts now. I'd sell one if I was hard up for rent or something, but otherwise I plan to save them for a special celebration.

But yeah, fucking crazy how people turned around on a dime once someone else told them the thing they thought was shit was actually really fucking good. While I'm glad I got out of the bar world, I'm happy that I developed a palate so I can still find good underappreciated spirits. I'm not rich, but I like having nice things.

Season 1 was so different from the later seasons. It was mostly about Bob with the kids providing comic relief and B stories. And Bob would deal with the darker sides of adult life like burnout, mental breakdowns, there's the episode where gets adopted by trans prostitute and smokes meth with them. Also a bigger focus on the mortuary next door which they basically dropped over time. Not it's all about the kids and their emotions about growing up and fucking musical numbers.

I hear what you're saying and trend chasing is stupid as fuck, but I also feel uncomfortable with the idea that people should necessarily be defined by something they explored when they were younger. Some people chase taillights and that's fucking lame, but some people just become fascinated with something new and wear that skin for awhile. I don't think that having liked something for awhile means that you need to be all about that for the rest of your life, nor should it prevent you from being interested in something else. People grow and change.
I actually think it's kind of lame when someone chooses the person they are, and then that's it.

This is the general rule for most fashion trends. Anything can look good if you're really hot. Not too long ago, bowties were being hyped up as the new thing. The thing is, the models on posters and ads could make them look good just because they were hot and they could make ANYTHING look good. Most of the people I saw in the wild wearing bowties looked like absolute retards.

That was a problem with the super tight hipster clothes, and is now a problem with the super baggy clothes. Both look good on the right body, but most people don't have that. In the '00s and '10s, people looked uncomfortably stuffed into their slim or skinny fit clothing (don't even get me started on the WAAAAY too tailored suits guys wore with high rise pants and no socks), and most of the baggy clothing now makes people look fucking sloppy as shit (just as it did in the 90s).

>Also you do know millennials didn’t invent the concept of hipsters right? Because you solely mention late 2000s groups
I'm aware, but I was a young adult in the mid to late 2000s and at that point in my life, was surrounded by other young adults trying to be cool so my frame of reference for "hipsters" is based on my direct experience with them. We could talk about how bebop was music of the hipsters in the 50s, or how post-punk genres like new wave were for hipsters of the 80s.

My experience with people who are into Aphex Twin may be different. I work in the music industry and know A LOT of people who are into him that I wouldn't consider a hipster by any stretch of the imagination. A lot of them are audio dorks with engineering degrees and shit. The people who dig into the sort of modular synthesis stuff AT was into aren't hip.

>but want something beyond dance beats
Yeah, no shit. It was called IDM and that whole genre was largely kicked off by the work of Aphex Twin and similar artists. Before that, if you wanted electronic music that eschewed danceable beats you could dive into stuff like Brian Eno/Vangelis, or go super heady with stuff like Morton Subotnick or Pauline Oliveros.

Just because something is popular doesn't make it "hipster" either.

Good boots can be resoled. And if you're fucking up the uppers, then that's on you. If you have a good pair of boots and actually take care of them, they'll last a lifetime. Keep them clean, don't let mud dry on them, give them a good conditioning every once in awhile to keep them from cracking. Resole them as needed.

Even if shit happens like they get chopped in half (in which case, RIP your foot), you still shouldn't have to replace them multiple times a year.

You're either LARPing or retarded. Regardless...look into taking better care of your work boots and you'll save a fucking buttload of money. Repairs (as are new boot purchases) are tax deductable, so save the receipts.

I'll give you the presidential thing. Things have gotten a lot more divisive over the last 10 years or so. Unfortunately, I think that was a deliberate choice in politics - bolster voter allegiance at the expense of cohesion of the general society. Sucks.

That said, I do notice a lot more mingling now in some ways that you wouldn't have seen as much 10-15 years ago (and before). I find when I see live music these days, the room tends to be filled with people of a much more diverse demographic...this includes race, age, socioeconomic background, etc. The type of music you listened to used to sort people into "tribes" and when you'd go to a show, you'd often see people who all kind of looked the same. These days people from very different backgrounds can all bond over liking something like music, and I think that's awesome.

I disagree. There are some composers/musicians in the art/academic world that are a flash in the pan, but by and large, artists in those circles tend to have much longer careers spanning their lifetimes. The argument isn't whether or not they are popular, but that the artistic entity is still active at all.
Maria Schneider has more longevity than Matt and Kim. Part of it is that people who work in the art/academic music world tend to have a lot more training, so they can approach their career more deliberately. Some pop musicians are able to continue evolving as well, but the one hit wonder is much more common.

I'm not a big rap metal guy, but I have been to plenty of rock shows and my experience has been different. I've seen bands from the 80s/90s/00s and the room is filled with people who grew up with the music as well as people who don't even look like their old enough to be at the show. And while the rooms are admittedly predominantly white, there isn't an insignificant amount of black/brown people too.

No, now it's cool to be part of the "hustle culture" where you either work five part time jobs at once or do various scummy parasite things like dropshipping, to get enough cash to buy some designer sneakers that look like melted plastic (that you wear once and then resell for twice what you paid for it).

>I assume you are talking about yoji
I have no idea what the fuck yoji is. I'm too old. I've noticed that baggy jeans and baggy clothes in general are fashionable again (at least in the giant metropolitan city I live in) and there are tons of stores following suit. I went to Uniqlo recently just to get some basics and everything in the store now is baggy fit. My GF and I were both teens in the 90s and we often talk about seeing stuff we remember from being kids coming back now. Baggy jeans, Doc Marten shoes/boots, chokers. This isn't just alt fashion. Even in office wear, I've seen loose/baggy fit pants, oversize sweaters, and wire rim glasses coming back.

If yoji is the reference to the haute couture shit coming out of Japan, there was that too. I had a roommate who would drape himself in black loose fabric and wear a little beanie that made his head look like a penis. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about straight up 90s shit.

Artists will always have a sort of mystique, but at one point in the late '00s to early '10s, everyone claimed to be an artist, and being bohemian and broke was "cool". While I don't agree with the term, people were very concerned with "selling out".
These days it's almost the opposite. Everyone is trying to be an influencer, and it seems less important to be original or creative, and more important to be able to monetize whatever you're doing. The goal is more about blowing up so you can parlay that success into doing ads for clothing companies on youtube or tiktok while that sort of thing would have very much been frowned upon in the previous hipster era. (Of course, I'm not saying that it didn't happen, but people would have either tried to hide that or been embarrassed by it, while these days it seems to be more of a point of pride).

As always with America black people start a trend and white people follow it. It USED to be a black people thing years ago but now thanks to youtube influencers selling it as a way to get rich quick and get yourself a bugatti it's a white people thing as well.

Say what you want about hipsters, they wouldn't have shilled a mustache-based memecoin to try and fleece everyone else because they at least had enough shame to not go down such an absurd path.

I don't think shame has as much to do with it as much as the tech was still super new then (or non-extistent depending on how far back you're tracing that era), and people were far less tech savvy. The ability to shill shitcoins now is due partially to people being more comfortable with technology, the tools that make it relatively simple to make a new coin, and the combination of people making money on BitCoin and Ethereum spiking in value making some early adopters rich as well as the proliferation of meme stocks that actually paid dividends.

In other words, I think it has far less to do with shame and a lot more to do with specific circumstances.
