I thought it was just okay when it first came out. Watched it a second time recently and liked it a lot more. That being said it's still pretty low on the Coen's totem pole for me.

Napolean Dynamite. When I was 10 my whole family went and saw it in theaters opening weekend. I'll never forget how utterly bewildered we all were in the car on the way home, just completely silent.

Then later we all started talking about it and quoting it again. It definitely filtered us at first

I feel like a lot of people felt this way about this movie but then enjoyed it as years went by. Not sure if itโ€™s because expectations were too high at first or what

Iโ€™ll give it another shot but it sure was disappointing. I donโ€™t expect to change my mind though.

No, it's shit. It's standard Coen 'famous people do silly things' fair.
Replace the actors in this movie with unknown actors who would do equal or better job than them, and absolutely nobody would ever give a shit about this one.

>low on the Coen's totem pole for me.
The bottom of the totem pole is actually the place of highest importance. So you're clearly retarded for saying this is better than Miller's Crossing.

First time I watched House of Yes I was unimpressed and now it's one of my favourites.

I saw the Science of Sleep in theaters with my GF while we were on the edge of breaking up. I hated it and thought the film was trying too hard to appeal to the twee DIY demographic that was super "hip" at the time. I ranted at great length about how much I hated it.
I never stopped thinking about it though, and eventually bought it on DVD and watched it several times over and now recognize it for being an incredibly unique story with extremely creative visuals. I definitely missed the mark on it. I think part of my initial response had a lot to do with how unhappy I was with my life and myself at that point in time.

I liked it the first time I watched it, it's the only Coen film that I thought had something to really say.

In answer to OP question, I did not like either The Two Towers or Return of the King the first time I watched them. But I have now seen the extended editions of each about 19 times.

meh, it's their most condescending movie.

The bit with him doing the ransom call going "I'm concerned about the security of your shit" is fucking hilarious though.

This was the only film where Brad Pitt acted differently for me, and it was hilarious. The gum chewing, the stupid lines and the scenario, and that closet scene of him smiling. I think I'll watch it again.

It is what entirety of Coen catalogue is built on. Their movies are basically SNL skits stretched to 2 hours.

Agree, and yet at the same time this is basically the absolute pinnacle of spy/espionage movies and it gets basically everything right. People talk about the LeCarre Smiley adaptations being bleak, but BaR puts them to shame.
