Over the past twenty years, Hollywood studios shifted focus to tent pole franchises because those could make the highest return on investment. The problem with that is they need talent that’s guaranteed to draw an audience so they kept pulling from the same pool of proven actors and when they did that they never gave any young actors a chance. The death of the mid budget movie meant those actors had to take opportunities in shows or movies developed for streaming which, while potentially popular, rarely capture the zeitgeist on the same level as a blockbuster movie generations ago. Last year, of the top earning actors, none were under fifty years old. Because studio suits are famously risk averse.

Now let’s break down the perspective of the young actors. If you were a young person thirty to forty years ago and you just wanted to be famous, your options were get good at acting and start auditioning for a tv show. Now, if you’re a young person and you just want to be famous, that is the least convenient method to achieve that goal. It’s a huge investment of time with no guarantee of a pay off. If you just want to be famous, you become a streamer or a YouTuber or a tiktoker. And if you do manage to become successful doing any of that, you aren’t beholden to a studio or a director- you are your own boss.

They made being a professional actor less and less desirable while other markets emerged and stole the talent they would normally get.
