Can't judge based on passing/failing students, since even the best teacher can't do shit if they get some dumb monkey who refuses to do any work and has parents who don't care.
Standardized testing scores are useless, since even for the smartest students there's no incentive to try. You can get a zero on a state test and still get in to Harvard.

You'd have to somehow track life outcomes for students like 10, 20 years post education. It's just not feasible.

Regardless Id argue the success of a student is more heavily effected by the quality of parenting and the students own temperament. Good students do well even with shit teachers.

I've done teaching and other jobs with fewer vacations. Teaching was by far the harder, more stressful job even compared to those with less time off. Very few people have the personality type suited to teaching. Some people will thrive on it, but most will hate it. When you have kids of your own you'll know that even getting them to behave can often be exhausting, ask any parent. Now times that by 30, some of them delinquents, some autistic, some on/off ADHD meds at random, some of them barely literate while others are far-too intelligent for their year-group and are being dragged down by the other kids, some parents who don't support their kids learning at all, etc... at the end of every day your voice will be gone.

It doesn't need to be that complicated. You can tell a good teacher from a bad one from how much efforts they make. You can usually tell when a teacher is actually passionate about their job and when they're not and only doing the bare minimum they can get away with, or having even worse conduct than the bare minimum required. You'd need cameras in classrooms and microphones that pick up on exchanges between the teacher and students. Review the class environment at least once a week on random days.

This is true, there's only so much that a teacher can do if the parents at home aren't inculcating a bare minimum level of discipline and good study habits and work ethic. But it's not always true that a good student does well with shit teachers. The quality of interactions and relationship between teacher and student absolutely has an effect on how well the student does in class.

When I was 3 to about 8 my mom stayed home and my dad worked at a company. My mom made me do my homework and study for exams and I got the best grades in my class. She was very strict, no playing before doing my homework, but as long as I did it she was very chill, she'd let me ride my bike on the street, play video games to my heart's content, etc.

There was this one nerdy kid whose grades were almost as good as mine (now as an adult he looks like Aldous Huxley, he just has that smart guy face). When I was 8 my mom went to work out of the house and my dad started working at home and my dad has absolutely zero concept of discipline. He didn't demand anything of me. I could do whatever the hell I wanted. Which meant a lot of watching tv, playing video games and fapping. My grades plummeted and to this day decades later it's very difficult for me to be disciplined. Now I'm middle-aged and a fuck-up. Meanwhile that one nerdy kid is now a doctor.

I'm not trying to lay all the blame on my dad but just imposing the most basic ass discipline on your kid makes a world of difference. Just don't let them play before doing their homework and do it consistently. Shouldn't be difficult.

(I get mad just thinking about this, I've had fights with my dad about this, but he's just a stubborn simpleton type, it's like he can't quite grasp the enormous importance of not spoiling your children when they're young. It's not just by accident or purely genetic reasons that Asians do so well academically. Parents in those cultures take studies very seriously and ingrain good habits and discipline since a very young age. They do sometimes go too far. It is certainly possible to completely leach a kid of all life by having unreasonably high expectations and rules and boundaries (something that is prevalent in Asian cultures), so there needs to be a balance.

Letting a kid run amok and just do whatever they want is irresponsible though. I think if your mom had stayed home instead of your dad then most likely things would have gone differently.

I was in a shit school in the sticks but we never had more than 15 people per class, I can only remember one single time I ever saw a serious classroom issue that would worry me as an adult. I transferred into a normal highschool for my last year and was initially shocked at how chaotic things were. I think having a tiny school helps in a lot of ways, most of us grew up together from kindergarden to highschool and our families all knew each other so I think doing anything too fucked up would ruin your reputation in the valley and since most people stay on to work there after graduating it could potentially affect your job prospects as well. In the big highschool I finished in you were basically anonymous and could get away with anything, teachers didn't care since you were just another dipshit in a sea of dipshits. if you are truly tutoring them and not just babysitting, be harsher in your evaluations, build more demanding work assignments. One girl I tutored in college developed a crush on me over the year I tutored her (constantly asking to go for drinks, inappropriate hand on shoulders or thigh) and that worked like a charm, although it did make me feel a little bit like a dick.

We do a lot of training and have some pretty sharp students running the place. We specialize in group sessions that use strategies to push students to work together, then seek out one on one after hours if they still need help after that. Last semester it really boomed and our program expanded almost double. Pretty cool stuff.

that's really cool, I talked to a HS friend about his college experience later on and learned about how structured their mentoring system was, truly a lifelong one-on-one friendship that he kept up even now that he's done. Even the tutoring was themed and planned out with actual professors helping out, all I got was a single A4 leaflet outlining the year's main subjects and a 'good luck kid'. It's crazy how different your college experience and education will be depending on where you end up, even though I enjoyed college I wish I'd taken more time researching the campus and how they handled students, kinda jealous of how good some people had it haha.

My brother went to an architecture program that did this, students all had their name and contact on a a huge whiteboard for their group with the stuff they were most confident in and the hours they were available along with what they hoped to get help on. Very helpful system although apparently it was abused a lot to just get pretty girls numbers, so it could have done with some improving on that front. His program had a lot of weird quirks like that, like each freshman year would get assigned to a studio system with students one year older than you, they were in charge of making sure you got all the help you needed on the practical side of things (models, IRL access to places, internship networking) but in exchange you were their bitch for whatever grunt work they needed done. When you got to second year you got to have a bitch. Third year they went off into fieldwork so no more studios.

Our college has really taken off recently as my main accounting professor has done wonders for the school. She managed to spear head and develop a bachelor program for a community college, so that’s saving me thousands. And she’s involved in all the volunteer events and the tutor program. I think for us the big issue was just lack of cash as well, no one gave a fuck because it was two tutors for a year of 400 students. My parents both work at the same manufacturing factory (I used to work there, too) my dad has been there for nearly 10 years. My mom just started about 1.5 years ago. Anyways my mom is a very competent worker and can outpaces people who have been there for as long as my dad has. There is one guy there, who is a arab mudslime, who literally sleeps sitting in his chair. The immediate managers know he's a retard but cant do anything about him because he's a diversity hire and the company gets tax benefits for having one of each minority. He did a job that took him four days to complete half of. Then he took a day off and the managers passed the job to my mom. She did the other half in 4 hours. I dont know what his pay is, but it's probably roughly the same. This kind of shit is one of the many many reasons I stopped working there, because I saw it happen constantly. I had spent 8 years working for that company and by the time I left I was an extremely specialized and competent worker with my own dedicated lane of work which directly impacted how well the company as a whole did. Basically me and one other guy built samples for customers, which would determin if they ended up putting in orders for hundreds of thousands of dollars or not. By the time I was ready to leave, I learned that a new hire, with no experience, was getting paid the same amount as me. I was livid man. Next time raise discussions came up, I asked to be bumped up to 24 from 17. They didnt even give me 19. I quit a few months later. You are absolutely right. Mediocrity is encouraged. The people who work better are not paid better, therefore it's in their best intrest to float down to the middle. This is america.

Kind of in same boat. My mom was strict and wouldn’t let me hang out with friends after school. Years go by of playing video games in isolation and I fall way behind peers. Come college I had no idea to talk to people and make friends. I graduated having gone the four years without anyone knowing me.
