I remember thinking Joker making one billion dollars would shift the narrative and we'd get endless Elseworlds DC movies that wiped the floor with Marvel and they'd be done by the early 2020's. We're midway through the 2020's and we're still at square one. Fucking hell.

Factor in TDK literally changed the amount of nominees allowed for the Academy Awards categories puts things into perspective. It was always the more serious of the two.

DC has always been the more respected and prestigious brand because its characters thrive on reinterpretation and a standalone nature. A Joker movie made as much as a tentpole MCU movie for fuck's sake. and won Oscars. Bad sequel aside, that is still a monumental achievement that shows how uneven the playing field is when DC taps into its best: artistic auteur stories that stand alone. Nolan proved it as did Joker, Watchmen and Constantine.
