The first one starts with a clear premise, they're going on a cruise, then the disappearance happens which then turns the the plot into search for Anna, sure this is mostly ignored but it still serves as an anchor to keep the film somewhat grounded at least we know why we are supposedly even watching even if that's being subverted.
In La Notte I waited for well over an hour for at least some direction to be revealed, there was none until around the point where Mastroianni meets his wife returning to the party with the other guy at which point both of them have a diffrent companion by there sides and that's like 15 minutes before the film ends.
