The international audience doesn't see Superman as this generational hero that represent all of us. We all know he is an American creation. His costume is bright red and blue. He got a huge "S" on his chest. He's the most American hero there is. Drabbed in the color of the American flag and with a big dollar sign on his chest.
That doesn't mean we dislike the character, but it is what it is. Superman is an American creation. We like him. He can say "The American Way" and it is fine. We expect it. It feels weird and awkward when he doesn't say it.
It's like thinking that Spider-Man also isn't American or something. Once again bright red and blue. A Jewish kid from goddamn New York.
