Why did older movies look so good but modern films look like garbage ? Like they can't even make sets look good anymore.
Rocky's apartment looked like a real shit hole that a poor guy would actually live in. In a modern film it would be totally lifeless and nondescript

Film was expensive so you gave it your all every take. Digital would be great if they used it exclusively for Anchorman-style comedies that require several improvised takes and documentaries. Using it for any other type of film is misguided and leads to lower standards on set and per take. They can make it look good in post (they won't) so they record the most maliable capture that they can pull off to expedite post-production.
More details in a set, for instance, provides more opportunities for an item to move it's place between two takes.

film vs digital

A lot of the 60s and 70s New Hollywood was made on much lower budgets compared to the average film today. Movies like Rocky, Easy Rider, Mikey & Nickey, Two Lane Blacktop, French Connection.. they all have that gritty pseudo-documentary look (it helps that they used film instead of digital).

Production design has fallen by the wayside in favor of post. You might think it's retarded to replace proper costuming, set work, location scouting, etc. with post-production, but that's been the reality of film and video since 2012. Sometimes the director pours everything he can into CG and VFX as the main element of a shot, maybe some choreography and blocking here and there as an afterthought, but the majority of attention circles around post and how all physical handiwork serves that pipeline, instead of the other way around.

Take this random webm of Frances Ha I've got saved, for instance. Only a decade old but the cynic in me guarantees you the modern way to shoot this would involve
>a locked off cam situated a bit above the eyeline
>a treadmill for the actress to run on
>greenscreen
>some fucking UE5 background in place of a real street because oh no we don't want her to accidentally get hurt :(
>clothing tape to keep her skirt from flailing out and turning into a potential tripping hazard
>no backpack for the same reason - director's probably already mulling about adding in a CG bag. A purse? A satchel? Shit, man, fucking do anything, who gives a fuck about how our characters look
>default AE wiggle applied to camera in post for added motion

That's part of the problem. You've got directors and DPs with direct access to Red cameras and the like, but it sure as hell feels like the freedom log footage gives you makes these people neglect actual effort in designing the real world.

Great lenses, better cameras, knowledgeable old duffer in charge of lighting;etc. Now it's young dumbshits who think everything should be lit like their bathroom.

We need to bring back 35mm films. 70mm as well.
Sad fact, United Artists threw out all 35mm soundtracks for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, leaving just one 70mm track.

On top of the above about production values and digital writers, producers, directors etc. lack experience. Sly lived as a broke bum and knew exactly what that life entailed. He drew from his own experiences in writing Rocky. Writers now grew up sheltered and knowing nothing but Hollywood and movies.

It's not just the difference between film and digital. It's about the overall change toward realism that happened starting in the mid 60's(?).

Back during the golden era of hollywood, it was the opposite; where you'd have shopgirls who work at department stores living in multi-level apartments with housemaids and cooks.

1. everyone who knew how to make movies quit because they didn't want to make netflix slop for bad pay
2. every streaming service demands that 50% of the behind the camera talent is a minority of some sort, unqualified people are now making movies
3. you can't get an oscar nomination unless you have blacks starring in your movie now, ruining the on screen talent pool
