I kinda agree with this but then on the other hand, do we really need half an hour or something of setup to explain who Superman is and where he comes from? Everyone knows, and everyone has already seen his backstory and shit. But with Lex it definitely is kind of a problem because we just haven't seen him an Superman interact before this movie so the idea of him having become obsessed and envious of Superman doesn't really hit so hard because all that shit happened offscreen before the movie even started.

Well I do think the movie is good, or at least pretty decent. It is a lot of fun and all the characters are great but Corenswhet just isn't Reeve, he doesn't come close. He's likeable but he seems a little too much like a random dude, Reeve both had that larger than life hero vibe and he still had a lot of humanity, and the way he played Clark Kent and Supermen so differently and would subtly switch between the persona's was pure kino. The new Superman and the new Clark are just the same guy and this Clark is way too cool, I prefer him being an awkward goody two-shoes.

I just got home from the theater and liked this. It's a very solid comic book movie for sure. This is strong beginning to whatever DC universe they're making along with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
I liked all of the other metahumans as well. What I really liked about this was that it wasn't just another origin story and jumps right into established storylines.

Absolutely terrible movie on so many levels.

The writing was truly amateurish:

We begin with one of the most embarrassingly brazen exposition dumps ever seen.

We follow that up with Superdog, because their target audience is 6-year-olds, I guess?

Next we get the quirky retro-robots, which are the first example of why this movie fails, throughout. It's an interesting concept that is given no room to breathe and develope. We'll be seeing a lot of those.

Next, more exposition dumps in the form of Superman's video blog. For a movie that didn't want to be an origin story, why are they showing us this (and only this) part of his origin story? Oh, because they're going to ruin it in a couple of scenes.

Next we meet the first of many half-baked overpowered villains.

Remember that really cool moment at the beginning, when we see Superman bleed? What kind of titan could do that?! What a great mystery?! Oh... it's just ... retro, chubby Iron Man from [insert fake country here]... cool.

Pretty soon we're treated to another staple of this movie: we learn that the stakes in epic battle scenes could not possibly be any lower. Sure, superman is fighting a Godzilla-sized creature, but no worries, because at any given time only one or two people are in danger. Heck, he even has time to save a squirrel.

Later, when a skyscraper falls onto a crowded bridge, Superman is thankfully there just in time to save that one person who is in danger.

Absolute clown show.

I guess these things would be forgivable if Superman himself were at all interesting or recognizable, even. But he isn't. He has absolutely none of the personality traits of the Superman we all know and love. He also has no agency. The story just happens to him. He makes no actual choices except at one point he want so save Superdog.

Both your movies suck.

The issues with the Snyder movie have been talked to death so I’ll focus on Gunn.

Dude. We get it. You’re quirky. It was cute in Guardians. In Superman it was so cheesy and awkward and completely ruined the movie.

What an annoying fucking movie. The worst part and most frustrating part was there are moments when it’s all played a little straighter that it could have been good. Moments of real emotion. The ma and pa Kent stuff, Lois and Clark’s scenes and chemistry. Moments when Superman is doing stuff we can at least relate to in our world. The actor was great. Lois too. No issues there. It made me wish these elements were in a movie that wasn’t Guardians of the Galaxy 4.

There was just so many goofy things here that just made me wonder what the shit I was watching. Tonally it felt off too.

But other things stuck out as well that didn’t feel right. I’m not a comic book guy so maybe that’s the issue but:

Superman being doted on by robots who put him in a chair and play movies for him? What is he a baby?

Making his parents evil?

The HAREM? Like what the fuck.

Hawk girl and engineer were terrible actresses

The humor didn’t work (except for the dog and Superman’s aw shucks way of speaking - which come to think of it sort of came and went.

He just seemed sort of self involved and egotistical. He cooked Lois his favorite meal? His secret hide door out is a giant S for Superman?

Supergirl felt very tacked on.

Ok Gunn we get it you like punk music. Jesus Christ. I don’t see Superman as liking punk. At all.

I think people simply are afraid to say their real opinions, because everyone online is praising it. I'm really curious about what the general audiences will think about the movie, because it feels inaccessible due to the first act that does a terrible job establishing the characters. I for one was excited and went to watch it on day 1, but the pacing was ass and the first third is infodump after infodump. I was fine with the lack of origin story, but the movie has so many plot points it feels like it's afraid to bore you.
The comparisons to Spiderman 2 are absolutely retarded too, because that movie actually let the scenes breathe, thus the character arcs were better constructed and their resolutions hold actual weight and emotion.
Most people probably think Superman was fine, it's the die-hard fans who might make you believe otherwise. We'll see how it does with GA and internationally
