I saw this a few years back and you know what, I didn't hate it.
If you watch this after you have seen bilge like Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey, the Flash and Aquaman 2, you apreciate how good you had things back then. Its very much a family film vibe, like Antman and did not fit in with the darker DC films at the time, like Nolan's Batman trilogy, which were aimed at an older audience. That's the real reason for all the vitriol.
American's especially, but a lot of other people and film critics react with rage if a film isn't EXACTLY what they had expected going into it. It doesn't matter if the film is still good or indeed better as a result, if its not what baby wanted the toys are going to be thrown out of the pram. A recent example of this is Argylle, America wanted James Bond with a bit of Kingsman played by Henry Cavill and collectively did its nut at the twist. Seriously, there were riots in some American cinemas, people pulling up the seats and throwing them at the screen, shooting their guns in the air, that sort of thing, and nobody clapped at the end.
Never mind that it was a decent little family film, probably made to sell merchandise to kids too young to see the current Batman films, Americans wanted a darker take on the Lantens so this relatively breezy and lightweight little family scifi romp didn't land well at all.
Its not the best film ever, but isn't a bad film either, certainly not on the level of the hate it gets, and is better than every film in the post Joss Weed-on Justice league continuity films.
