I think Dear Zachary is the worst experience I’ve had because it’s actually real so the helplessness isn’t just a story.

An all-time favorite movie of mine but damn I can’t watch it too often because it is absolutely soul crushing.

This one was great. It wasn't comically dark or miserable but the scene where PSH broke down crying because of his father hit me very hard. It's an excruciating sight seeing a man cry. Plus, everything goes wrong for everyone involved and it's very realistic in its setting and event transpiring.

There's only two actual actors in this entire movie and the rest are actual Naples natives and gangsters. It paints a very grim and bleak picture of how hopeless these South Italians are and how demonic the Camorra mafia in Europe is. They kill just as much and just as brutally as drug cartels but nobody knows outside of Europe.

True but that's what it sets out to do and it actually does it in a much more plausible and palpable way than a lot of other movies. It is eerily realistic to life. So many men roam the streets burdened by wasted lives and quiet desperation like the Butcher. It stuck with me because my uncle had a lot of the same problems as the MC in that movie. Thanks for recommending Angst. I'll check it out. Lots of good movies in this thread. I'll chip in with this. It's directed by Gary Oldman. It's 10/10.

Irreversible was close to being a stone cold classic rather than just a glorified shock flick if only they just cut out the gimmicks and told the story as it should've been: play it linearly but don't show the rape well into the end. Make the audience believe, like the two men, that they got justice only for the final scene to be the rape unedited and uncut, as the movie laughs in your face for believing for a second justice was served. Also, make it clear Alex was pregnant and the rapist killed her (she succumbed to her wounds) and the baby in her stomach to drive home the nuclear despair. Maybe even include a scene where the two men are told they killed the wrong man just before the rape at the end.

You're trying to hold it up to American film styles and practices when it's a Eurofilm. One thing you'll notice is that Euro movies tend to be less dramaticized and stylized and more naturalistic/realistic. It may have felt one dimensional to you but it pretty much is showing you the life of an old man in France. It's definitely only fully appreciated if you're well versed in European style of filmmaking. Buffalo 66 is too whimsical sometimes and stylized to really hit, and that's by design. You can't compare the two. Apples and oranges. Naked is much closer to ISA than the other examples you posted.

If it is as you claim, I don't see what makes ISA "cringe" over any other European misery porn film. Euros show life as it is so it's not so much a problem as you say. They don't suffer from it. Their culture is just less infantilized, and they don't have the capital to waste on media that just numbs them to the facts of life. This film is one of the hardest I've ever watched. There's absolutely no catharsis. No divine or even circumstantial comeuppance. Just nihilistic, sadistic misery for everyone involved. I felt like absolute shit after watching it for the first time and after showing it to a friend also felt like shit again after watching it.

The home invasion triple rape and murder scene is especially difficult to watch even if it's not as explicit as something like A Serbian Film. The overall atmosphere and blasé, casually dismissive attitude towards human life is hard to stomach.

Hey anons, question: why do so many of your "bleak" and "misery" films feature rape or a serial killer?

I have nothing against rape, I even enjoy it in a movie but it is so stupid. Being raped is not even the worst thing that can happen to a woman, some women fall in love with their rapist like that 1 american woman who became semi famous writing how she dated her rapist after the rape and even left her husband for the rapist.

When I think of misery I think of male misery, men receive no help in real life. Abandoned men, poor men, men who were overly protected by their moms and then forced into the world are like peak misery/pathetic, but no movie seems to tackle that. Like yeah, a lonely old man in france is sad, but desu all old people are somewhat sad. Where are the stories about young men living in fucking modern society and not receiving love even from their own progressive parents? The stories about male school shooters showing how the school system creates school shooters because female and male teachers hate boys and specifically bully them either openly or indirectly? Stories about young men never finding love with no unrealistic cute girl coming to save him but rather society hating the character because single men are seen as worthless?

And I am not even mysoginist, women can have sad stories too but they are so unrealistic. Irl only like 1 woman in 100k ends up living a truly tragic life, everyone will try to save a woman irl. Men are like 3 in every 10 will die tragically or a suicide and yet there are few realistic sad stories about them.

That's also why the serial killer misery porn is stupid, the serial killer is sme soft sigma who doesn't want to kill but has to and regrets it or one who wants to kill and is super evil and gets away with killing babies and the point of the sad flick is to show you the bad man got away.

The black teacher is revealed to have only "helped" Derek so he can groom him to be a Nazi spy for the police, never giving a fuck in actuality about his well being or him changing. He renounces his ideology only for it to mean squat due to what I just mentioned and his brother being killed for a slight offense he made to some joggers who shoot him dead over it. I genuinely feel kinda bad for Gaga. I remember watching a couple of interviews with her before the dumpster fire came out and she seemed so exited about playing Harley and apparently spent a long time writing songs and making choreography for the musical scenes. Then the movie comes out and the vast majority of her scenes got cut and they didn't use a single song she wrote/filmed in the final cut.
