In Clive Barker's short films Salome & The Forbidden you can see he was already forming aeshetic ideas that would birth Pinhead. It takes actual artists to create monsters of wonder. Same with Giger's Alien.
Horror has too many director led projects these days, it needs more traditional artists involved in the genesis of ideas.
It's no coincidence that the biggest new horror franchise Terrifier was created by an Makeup/SFX artist turned director.

Doom Asylum

I finally had the opportunity to check this out and it was a pretty decent watch. Nothing ground breaking or amazing but I don't miss my 90 minutes, it has some fun sequences, a decent protagonist duo, decent comedy and some nice kills.
Why are holidays slashers always so comfy? Thanksgiving, My Bloody Valentine (not sure if it's a controversial opinion but I prefer 3D to the original), hell, Terrifier 3 was the best out of the three (and a half) movies.

Alright I've now watched all the Scream movies.
6 was a lot better than 5 was. My tentative ranking of the movies is.
2 > 1 > 6 > 4 > 3 > 5
Might need to give some thought about swapping a few of these, but I'm certain of 3 and 5 being the worst two. 3 isn't even really bad it's just not nearly as good as the other ones. 5 has some good kills but is otherwise kind of boring and unfunny.

The Thing from Another World was actually closer to The Thing than I expected. Not in tone or monster, just in an antarctic battle vs alien sense.

Not a movie but watched the French show 'Marianne' on Netflix and had a blast. Genuinely scary in parts, and owes a lot to Stephen King.

What's great about it? There was little gore and the sequels did it much better, the acting was horrendous (even if you try to view it as a "so bad it's good" type film), there were basically no characters (the main girl was cute but she's no Sienna) and the sets were limited to what, a pizza parlor and a random storeroom? It was a bad nothingburger movie that luckily made enough money to allow Damien to make a real movie as a sequel. I get that you don't see it this way, so feel free to explain what's so fucking "truly great" about it.

The acting in 2 and 3 is no better, only the sequels put more emphasis on it anyway. Sienna is not a talented actress and the script isn't good enough to justify more time spent on the plot and dialogue. The gore is better in 2 and 3, but (especially in 2) they drag out the rest of the movie so much with boring shit that it's hardly worth it.
T1 benefits from being shorter and simpler, with a constant tension. And the girl is a lot better looking.
