It may seem big on paper but let’s do some comparison. NYC has something like (off the top of my head) 10-15 million people? I believe the next largest city in America is LA, with an equal or possibly greater amount of people. Again, not bothering to look this up, because the figures don’t need to be exact, is the decline. And it is always deserted. No one around. I'll go there for hours and I might see the odd homeless person walk through. For me rural/remote is great but it has to be near kino nature, and with some access to a city because there are still resources I would use there that aren't in remote places. In the US, the west has the best nature but the cities are shit. I grew up in a really small rural town of like a little over 3k people, it was basically a farming town. I could walk a little and I’d be at the edge of town where a bunch of farms surrounding the place. I spent lots of time hiking the farmlands since the farmers didn’t seem to care or notice, I had no idea who they were.

growing up in a really rural conservative leaning area was pretty terrible for me. I experienced a lot of “homophobia” as an example even though I wasn’t gay. People thought I was weird, strange, or highly defective. I was like Forrest Gump to these fucking people, but I think it was all some sort of prejudice/racism looking back. Since I already didn’t fit in, I was but able to learn or gain any social skills. And I was alone all the time.

The people I grew up around were xenophobic and were all scared of the city and thought I was literally insane for wanting to move to the city, like they just couldn’t imagine or comprehend it. Like talk about old world, places time has forgotten and doesn’t move or change from.

I moved to a city eventually when I was still teenager like I wanted, I lived there for a few years, but I ran into a lot of the same problems. Generally I decided that I needed to live in a cosmopolitan city to really live in a place that was the most advanced and had the most civilization.

I live in a big cosmopolitan city now, but I haven’t really been able to fully experience or enjoy the city. I now want to leave Canada, I visited Seattle not too long ago and I had more positive experiences. You see the city I live in is supposed to be liberal, but from my experience it’s pretty much just work/drone slave culture.

Santa Cruz still has some elements of the old culture left, it's interesting because the University sits over the town, but it is also directly adjacent to this total backwoods hayseed area called Felton, and the third blade of the treyarch is Scotts Valley, which is a sort of rich conservative enclave that is shielded from the other two by geography.

There are still some very interesting clubs and people there, or at least there were ten years ago. i don't even like going to restaurants or bars for the most part I'm more an outdoors type and so besides going to venues (which my favorite venue of all time was in a sub 200k city) theres not really a whole lot urban areas have to offer me, generally I'm looking for a town with under 80k people thats 45 minutes or less from a moderately bigger city but more importantly a lot closer to woods and whatnot, right now I live in Jersey and its shocking how shitty some of the grocery stores can be with their variety and I'm like 40 miles from NYC

Depends how small. I live in a city of roughly 30,000 people, and the only thing I have to go to the capital for is usually concerts, but lots of big bands have stopped by my town too. Also, I live at the absolute edge of town and there's a forest right across the street and there's a lake a two minute bike ride away for swimming in summer. Can't imagine living anywhere else.

but because it's a college town there's always young people around and all the shit that having them brings(like nice coffee shops, craft stores, gyms, clubs)

i was that kid. bought a shitbox house in the city three years ago and i regret it every single day. despite being a "big city" there's virtually nothing to do unless you enjoy club hopping (which i do not). the only legitimate reason you should move into one is for a career, not a temp job like my dumb ass did. and even then, it's a better idea to live in the nearest town once you have a career in the city area.

i'm gonna either sell or rent it in a few years and move back with parents since they're getting old and can't move around like they used to

Part of the problem is what's happened to the suburbs. It used to be a halfway point between the city and the country, it would have been fairly common to have people raising chickens in their back yard or growing a market garden or something. But around the 50s the idea of the suburbs changed to be some kind of residential resort, a place to be when you weren't in the city working. So instead of there being a gradient of things becoming less or more countryfied as you got closer or further away from the city, with the suburbs being a kind of mixed-use transition zone, it just became a system of 3 completely distinct unrelated blocks with no overlap.
