So, unnies, I finished Weak Hero season 2 and … I dindu really like it, honestly.

The first season was a dark, fairly banal, but vaguely realistic bullying drama. Now the second season abandoned the “vaguely realistic” part altogether and is loaded with tropes straight from a Korean webtoon - teen gangs, super powered teens beating up legions of adult fighters, all that. All wrapped up in a psychologically even more banal story.

The fight scenes and the general tone of the narrative were well done, but that’s really it. Cannot give it a rating above average.

So there’s my updated ranking of everything I’ve watched so far.

So I finished Our Unwritten Seoul, the latter half was kind of eventless and a letdown. Updated list, I have barely watched anything so far, so its very incomplete:

Korea treats their media as a sort of soft power and puts in a concentrated effort in spreading it around/pursuing the international market. I wouldn't say kdramas are necessarily any better or worse than Japanese shit (that's up to personal taste), but I do think they have a higher degree of polish on average. Accessibility also plays a part. Most kdramas these days get picked up for international distribution and are easy to find on legitimate platforms, while jdramas are still largely fansubbed afaik

In Korea it happened over a 30 year span. You had well connected in league with a military dictator in a suit. I’m learning Korean because it is a part of the Altaic language group (Turkic, Mongolic, Koreanic, Tungusic, and Japonic languages), and I want to understand its structural similarities with Turkic languages and its semantic behavior. And I visited Korea, which was much cooler than I expected and got me interested too

Incoming blog.
It all stems (mostly) from Kpop for me. Which Im trying to mature my interest in Kpop into liking K-Dramas, Korean history, and eventually learning Korean.
Thing is, learning a language is a time consuming, difficult, high effort, and high maintenance hobby. While my interest is with South Korea right now, overall, I probably have more interest in Japan. Learning Japanese alone is like a full time job, learning both Korean and Japanese is... very unrealistic. I made the decision a while back to cut Korean and study Japanese. Still though, I eventually ended up picking up this Korean language book. Which I havent had time to actually start. Even if not the whole language, I still want to know some basic Korean to understand some Kpop, and maybe some K-Dramas. I like the little words Ive learned already like nugu and chingu, Honestly I just want to go full Korean but I know long term Ill probably return to Japanese interests.

My Korean history is going well though, Im like halfway through that book. Feel like it gives a bit of context to the context of an average South Korean, which in turn makes me understand K-Dramas a little bit better.

I did some, then lost interest, then did a little more, etc.
Personally, I only wanted to learn enough to understand most drama dialog, but all the courses I found want to teach in the usual Uni way, which was way more work than I wanted.
However, one anon here has been using a browser plugin (asbplayer) and GPT to do language learning with the subtitles while watching, and that looks a lot more towards what I want so I'll probably try that out.
