I have a theory that the reason Matt Reeve's Batman 2 script took longer than expected was due to rewrites to leave the door open for Pattinson to show up in the DCU, not necessarily for him to actually be in it, but just making the second movie vague enough, like cutting out a villain (realistic Clayface?) so just incase Gunn and Reeves think it is the right choice down the line if they believe that making an entirely new Batman is unnecessary.
