It was always a little too pretentious for me, even compared to the Sopranos. My top 5 would probably be:

1. The Sopranos
2. True Detective s1
3. Justified
4. The Shield

The only other one from that list I watched is Breaking Bad, Wich isn't pretentious at all, if anything it achieves character depth untouched by Pizzolatto, while also delivering pulp fun.
Maybe the other shows mentioned are also pretentious crap, I dunno.

I can never make it past the first half of the first season because none of the characters appeal to me. The setting is dreary. All the cops use cop jargon. And all the drug dealers use ghetto slang. The show is just too difficult to become immersed in.

The political messages are timeless. They will always work. It was hardly tied into anything specific about Obama's years. Nothing ever really changes enough for the stories not to work. Great writing works that way. You can look for whatever parallels you think are in any given series and see them if you want. Doesn't mean much. If anything The Wire only grows in appreciation the more time goes by. More and more audiences are introduced and it has waves of new popularity. People are finding cool older shows all the time since the advent of streaming and on demand.

What're you talking about? Sopranos and Wire are more pretentious because of the direction choices like the symbolisms. These doesn't make them better or worse, is just that they have a bigger scope of themes than shows like Shield or Justified. In fact I think BrBa is the worse of them all, since it tries to do artsy perspectives and touch complex topics, but it never pays off in the end.
