>>212659331 Good ranking. I haven't seen Justified but loved The Shield, what am I in for? >>212660083 After Obama's second term it aged like milk. This is the problem to have a sole political message in your show, it might backfire sometime in the near future.
>>212659331 >2. True Detective s1 How to spot the brainlet. Show filled with cliches and empty banalities sold as deep philosophy. If you mention a show being pretentious, True Detective S1 is the king of the category. People only love it because of the "literally me" element, that helps them dramatize their mediocrity.
>>212660126 That's tricky since none anime had a cultural impact in the west. I don't know if it's the best one but it's up there with Lain, NHK and the original Berserk.
>>212660192 >singling out true detective in a top 5 list than includes bb the shield and fucking justified you are such an unbelievable pleb and clearly a plot fag too, ever heard of direction, acting, atmosphere? TD s1 is a masterpiece
>>212660199 It had no cultural impact in Japan either. It's viewed as positively there as we weebs view it here. But there are very, very few shows and manga, both modern and from that time, that try to go for a similar "intellectual" tone of a western prestige drama. Monster is one, for example.
>>212660215 I'm italian and insanely racist like if I could press a button and have every nigger on the planet die a slow painful death I'd do it in an heart beat and I still liked the wire a lot, it's just a very good series

>>212660192 The only other one from that list I watched is Breaking Bad, Wich isn't pretentious at all, if anything it achieves character depth untouched by Pizzolatto, while also delivering pulp fun. Maybe the other shows mentioned are also pretentious crap, I dunno. Yeah TD has good atmosphere, but it's basic neo-noir vibes, nothing unique.
>>212659284 (OP) Relevance and cultural impact aren't quantifiable and also don't make any difference on my opinion, which is that The Wire is the height of great television.

>>212659284 (OP) I can never make it past the first half of the first season because none of the characters appeal to me. The setting is dreary. All the cops use cop jargon. And all the drug dealers use ghetto slang. The show is just too difficult to become immersed in.

I criticize TD because its often mentioned as high quality writing for television. Everybody knows Peaky is dogshit.
>>212660167 The political messages are timeless. They will always work. It was hardly tied into anything specific about Obama's years. Nothing ever really changes enough for the stories not to work. Great writing works that way. You can look for whatever parallels you think are in any given series and see them if you want. Doesn't mean much. If anything The Wire only grows in appreciation the more time goes by. More and more audiences are introduced and it has waves of new popularity. People are finding cool older shows all the time since the advent of streaming and on demand.

>>212660742 What're you talking about? Sopranos and Wire are more pretentious because of the direction choices like the symbolisms. These doesn't make them better or worse, is just that they have a bigger scope of themes than shows like Shield or Justified. In fact I think BrBa is the worse of them all, since it tries to do artsy perspectives and touch complex topics, but it never pays off in the end.
