The writing is godawful, especially the historical characters and the main antagonist

I think smaller overall, and more like the old kino chart that lists some categories and gives a couple examples for each.
I think the current list is too much personal favorites from kdg and less about what a newbie should try first. Doona is an excellent example. Someone who's been watching a while might really like it for some of the non-conventional things it does, but those are likely to be either confusing or off-putting to a newbie.
So I would say the goal should be to just get the newbie to something they can enjoy and understand, and don't worry about trying to wow them with their first drama.
