The rest of the world did not, they have a surface level knowledge of Superman, the rest of it is like Star Trek for them, they perhaps heard of it but don't care about it.
Ultimately, you can simply have different visions for the same things. Like take Batman—you have the 60s show, Burton, and Nolan. All of them have their fans, and btw—Nolan also altered quite a lot about Batman, he made it way more realistic, and he's still praised to this day. Superman can be light and cartoony, he can be dark and realistic. There will be fans of both.
Second, imagine you're making, for example, a DBZ or Doraemon movie. Surely enough, you know most international audiences won't know half of the niggers from these shows. You also understand that half the people won't get Doraemon at all, and at best you want to shoehorn it into a Pixar formula. Or that the majority of Americans don't like anime, and DBZ will need to be changed.
Same thing with Superman. Of course it will enrage purists, but there's a reason these sacrifices are being made.
