Overly praising 4 does send negative signals. The first game that should be mentioned in a conversation about Resident Evil is RE1. Of course, RE4 is one of the best games ever made, but it's only an "okay" Resident Evil game.

Of course, the story in all RE is throwaway and serves the medium of video games - which is fine. So, sticking anywhere near close to the a story as shit as the RE series is a bad idea. Just capture the broad strokes of RE 1 and 2: cops investigate a spookey mansion in the woods outside of Raccoon City. Turns out it's run by Umbrella - a big pharma corp that makes bioweapons for the government and essentially owns the city. The cop's team leader is an Umbrella plant. Movie ends in mansion blowing up.

That's literally all they need to follow from the games.

To me the essence of RE is tactically clearing rooms one by one as opportunity or ammo allows. Then coming across puzzles/unexpected boss fights that reveal a larger corporate conspiracy leading to the final boss.

There is a zero percent chance any modern movie reboot can do this. 50% of the movie will be generic, ugly white woman in danger panning shots (while her mouth hangs open). 49% will be side characters not up to date with the plot trying to catch up and maybe, MAYBE 1% of the movie will involve a STARS member opening a door and finding a zombie inside.

What I find funny about RE adaptations is that adapting the first game is incredibly easy. It just plays out like a haunted house/conspiracy story and then they blow it up.

As long as he keeps it mostly accurate, I don't care. You can't be 100% lore-accurate because the franchise is full of plotholes and videogame logic. Even capcom doesn't stick to 100% accuracy when they re-cover the events of previous games. But the core story is interesting and hopefully he sticks to it

It's not unreasonable to draw a line between the original series and 4+, which for all intents and purposes is a game series all its own. Fans of one won't necessarily be fans of the other, and that's easily understandable. And if the director says "I love RE4, I can't wait to adapt RE1" that doesn't give the impression that it will be a good adaptation of classic RE.
