I admire what they were trying but I hated it

Doesn’t capture Burrough’s writing at all. I understand it was never going to be a direct adaptation, but Cronenberg lacks the nuance of Burroughs style. There’s a coarse absurdity contrasted with a bitter gloominess, and Cronenberg is simply incapable of conveying introspection.

I remember enjoying this quite a bit in my weird-movie phase, but haven't rewatched it in probably a decade. My weird-movie phase was also my stoner phase and I don't think I ever watched this sober. But it's more memorable than most movies I saw attempting a similar type of surrealism. I don't think I got any actual message of any value out of it, but the overall tone and feeling and imagery were pretty memorable. It did a pretty good job conveying this total departure from reality. I don't see it having much appeal or value outside of the teenage-stoner crowd looking for something "trippy," but I feel like that's exactly who this was made for, and it hits that spot better than most

>nuance of Burroughs style
>"a bubbly thick stagnant sound, a sound you could smell and the subject will come at his whistle, shit on the floor if he but say Open Sesame"
You are a fucking moron.

Yeah this. His writing is really fucking dry and it's honestly incredible Cronenberg even managed to pull something out of his ass for it

Yes, exactly. It accomplishes the mission statement set out in the logline. Nothing more, nothing less, but there are a lot of filmmakers who tried doing something like this and made absolute trash. Like it or not, this is a good execution of a certain style of movie, and there aren't really that many at this level of quality

I just found it boring. Worse than boring because there are a few scenes where it gets good but then it doesn't follow the thread.

>dry and subtle mean the same thing
>but they don't, and his writing, which includes a description of a steam-powered dildo as well as the line "some fucking drug addict smorted all my cocaine!", isn't dry anyway, faggot retard
Just admit you're a fucking pseud, even by /lit/ standards, and that you've never even read the book.

I think the main guy sucks. The delivery of everything is so sleepy I hate it. The special effects for the typewriters were god tier though
